Akalanka Peiris and Kiran Jasinghe took centerstage on day 3 of the Swimming leg at the South Asian Games 2019, establishing new National Records in the 100m Backstroke and the 50m Breaststroke events respectively.
Sri Lanka did not manage any Gold medals on a day that did not feature Mathew Abeysinghe, but the efforts Peiris and Jasinghe should not be underestimated as both continued with the momentum they’d built up during the past two days to add to Sri Lanka’s medal tally. Sri Lanka picked up 3 Silver and 5 Bronze medals in total today.

Akalanka, who set a new National Record in the 200m Backstroke last evening, did the same in 100m Backstroke, with a time of 54.14s to take the Silver medal behind Srihari Nataraj of India, who registered an exceptional time of 53.63s. Shevinda de Silva took Bronze in the same event, following close behind Peiris.
Jasinghe completed his hattrick of Bronzes at the games, taking 3rd place in the 50m Breaststroke, with a time of 28.79s, behind Likith Selvaraj (India) and Ariful Islam (Bangladesh).
The 50m Freestyle sprint saw Sri Lanka secure Silver and Bronze as Bhakthi Karanasena and Sandu Savindi finished behind Deepa Bhat of India.
Apart from Peiris and Karanasena, 16-year-old Ramudi Samarakoon was the only other swimmer who managed a Silver – she did so in the tough 800m Freestyle event. Samarakoon also took home the Bronze in the 50m Breaststroke.
Revan Senaratne faced stiff competition in the 400m Individual Medley, but managed to keep the Lankan flag flying high, grabbing the Bronze in the grueling race.
