The Mercantile Cricket Association’s premier 50-over tournament in its 27th edition commenced today with a lot of Sri Lanka Cricket’s blockbuster names in action. Out of the 7-participating team, 6 competed for their first win in the competition.

John Keells (A) Vs Sampath Bank

Opening this year’s competition, John Keells A and Sampath Bank locked horns at the P Sara Oval ground, Colombo as the latter won the toss and invited John Keells (A) to bat first.

John Keells opener and Sri Lanka ODI skipper Dimuth Karunaratne couldn’t get going as he was dismissed for 21 but the latest addition to the Sri Lanka T20I setup Minod Banuka and seam bowling all-rounder Ishan Jayaratne’s valuable contributions guided them to 195. Sampath Bank skipper Jeewan Mendis took responsibility for 4 opposition wickets with a spell of 4 for 43.

Chasing a modest 195, Sampath Bank collapsed for 9/99 thanks to the performance of seamers, Mohomed Shiraz, Ishan Jayarathne and Nuwan Pradeep who shared 2 wickets a piece before rain interrupted the game. John Keells A won the game by 87 runs according to the D/L method as Sampath Bank needed 186 at that moment as the par score.

LB Finance Vs Sri Lanka Under 19s

Added to the MCA Premier league to prepare for the upcoming U19 World Cup, the Sri Lanka U19s battled against a strong LB Finance outfit which featured a few big names like Dhananjaya De Silva, Shehan Jayasuriya, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Lahiru Udara, Angelo Perera and Isuru Udana at the MCA grounds, Colombo

The seniors decided to have a go at the Sri Lanka U19s bowling attacking after winning the toss and posted a healthy total of 285 for the loss of 8 wickets. Dhananjaya de Silva and Shehan Jayasuirya starred with the bat for LB Finance as they racked up 79 and 65 respectively. 

In the reply, the Sri Lanka U19s were troubled by the LB Finance seamers as the wickets fell in quick succession. Only the Sri Lanka U19 skipper Nipun Dananjaya overcame the challenge put on by the opposition bowlers as he cruised to a 44 ball 75, showcasing his talent at the highest level. The juniors were 180/8 in the 29th over when bad light stopped play, handing LB Finance a 73-run victory by D/L method.

MAS Holdings – Unichela Vs Dimo

Kamindu Mendis’s name popped up again in the highlight package of the contest between MAS Holdings – Unichela and Dimo as Mendis’ brilliant 78 guided MAS Holdings – Unichela to a 9-run win at Marians Cricket Ground, Katunayake.

MAS– Unichela who won the toss and decided to bat first, scored 250 thanks to Mendis’ unbeaten half-century and a few valuable contributions from opener Kusal Perera and Priyamal Perera. Nisala Tharaka led the Dimo attack with 3 wickets.

The chase by Dimo fell agonizing short 8 runs to the victory as all-rounder Ramesh Mendis’s fighting 66 went in-vain.
