Three games of the Singer U19 division 1 cricket tournament 2019 got underway today, 3rd October. 

Thurstan College, Colombo vs Richmond College, Galle

The game between Thurstan and Richmond played at the Thurstan grounds saw the visitors win the toss and elect to bowl first. The Thurstanites got off to a sloppy start as wickets tumbled right from the beginning of their innings. Except for the resilience from Ranesh Silva, no other batsman looked as if they could survive at the crease. Ranesh made 32 runs before being struck in front by Dilum Sudeera. The ace spinner for Richmond, Sudeera bowled tremendously to pick up 6 wickets for 29 runs. 

The Thurstanites were bowled out for a cheap 105 runs in under 40 overs on day one.

The Richmondites in reply looked brittle as wickets kept falling on one end while the opener Chamath Dilsara racked up 43 runs on his own at the other. Richmond College were on 65 for 3 at the close of play on day one.

Joes, Zahira end a low-scoring thriller in a draw


Dharmaraja College, Kandy vs St. Peter’s College, Colombo

Sahan Siriwardena’s fifer gave hopes of major honors in this tournament fixture for Dharmaraja College. The game is being played at the Rajans den, the Lake View grounds. The visitors got the favour of the toss and elected to bat first.

It was a decent effort by the Peterites as the team posted 226 runs for their first-innings with a collective effort from the team. The top-scorer was Kanishka Maduwantha with 40 while the core players like Sisika Santhush (35), Wanuja Kumara (29), Ruwin Senevirathna (27), Pabasara Herath (23) and Banuka Silva (23) all put up useful knocks with the bat.

The Rajans were looking quite comfortable with the bat as they ended the day on 35 for 1 after batting almost 12 overs.

Maris Stella College, Negombo vs St. Anne’s College, Kurunegala

Both teams had travelled to St. Sebastian’s College grounds in Katuneriya to play this traditional game hosted by the Negombo school. St. Anne’s Skipper Lasith Warnakulasooriya won the toss and asked his opposition to take the crease first. 

The Annite spin duo, Manaan Muzammil and Pasindu Tennakoon bowled well in tandem as they accounted for 9 wickets between them. Young off-spinner, Muzammil picked up his first fifer for the season. Thilina Perera showed resistance to the threat by the two spinners as he scored 46 runs for Maris Stella. The hosts were undone for 176 runs.

In reply, Kavindu Ranasinghe and Thrimalsha Silva took charge of the St. Anne’s innings following two early blows. The pair remained unbeaten on 42 and 30 respectively holding the team comfortable at 95 for 2 at the end of day one.
