Persistent wet weather curtailed the first ODI between West Indies and India at Guyana partway through the hosts’ innings.

The first delay came before the toss, reducing the game to 43 overs a side. Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to field, and his opening bowlers Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave him a tight start, restricting West Indies to 9/0 in 5.4 overs before the rain fell again.
Play was able to resume, with the contest further reduced to 34 overs a side. Chris Gayle, who became the most capped West Indian in ODIs, overtaking Brian Lara, remained circumspect, but Evin Lewis teed off, smashing 30 off 16 balls after the resumption. Gayle was bowled by Kuldeep Yadav for 4 off 31, and Shai Hope and Lewis looked to rebuild, reaching 54/1 off 13 overs. At that point, the rain fell once more, and though the ground staff tried hard, no more play was possible.
