21-year old right-hander slipped awkwardly on the side of his ankle while fielding in the 18th over of the match. South Africa captain Faf Du Plessis pushed a gentle delivery off Isuru Udana to cover region, where Fernando ran in and tried to cut down the single.

He immediately needed Physio Ajantha Wattegama’s attention and was later stretched out of the ground. Fernando struck his maiden ODI fifty during their win over Scotland in Edinburgh earlier this week.

However, Sri Lanka will be happy with the fitness of their wicket-keeper batsman Kusal Janith, who took the field on Friday after successfully recovering from his hamstring strain, which kept him out of competitive cricket for more than two months.

Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to field first at Sophia Gardens. They will play another warm-up match against Australia in Southampton on the 27th of May before playing their first match against New Zealand in the World Cup on the 1st of June.
