SLSRFA awaits Ministry approval to recommence league

Rugby League will only resume after Ministry of Defense approval

The Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) has forwarded their proposition to the Ministry of Defense and is awaiting their clearance to proceed with the Singer Schools Rugby League.

“I have spoken with the Minister of Sports, Harin Fernando and he has provided his fullest support to recommence the competition and I have forwarded our request to the defense ministry for clearance” added President of the SLSRFA, Ranjith Chandrasekara speaking exclusively to ThePapare.

The league was put on hold after the Easter Sunday attacks and later, the SLSRFA had hinted at resuming the competition on the 1st .of June The plan was that the second round of the Singer Schools Rugby League will resume on the 1st and will progress until the 30th of  June, with the Milo Knockout Trophy to follow soon after.

“We have specifically requested security for all rugby games from the Ministry (of defense) because security is of utmost importance at the moment. We (the SLSRFA) have forwarded a document with the dates for the games so that we can receive the support of the armed forces and police”

A schools rugby game was last played on the 20th

Schools Rugby games attract 2000-3000 spectators on average and owing to the current situation, the tournament organizers believe that security is a top priority for the commencement.

“I also urge the respective schools to make security arrangements so that it will be the best move at the moment” Chandrasekara further added.

A decision is expected to be reached by the end of the week from the Ministry and the SLSRFA will forward the respective documents to all schools and stakeholders.

“We will go with the same fixtures and I am very confident that we can start playing on the 1st of June”
