Nalanda, Maris Stella and St. Joseph Vaz claim first-innings wins

Nalanda College, Colombo, Maris Stella College, Negomobo, St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa recorded first-innings wins in the ‘Singer Cup’ under 19 division one tournament on Friday.

Gurukula College, Kelaniya vs Central College, Anuradhapura

Gurukula College, Kelaniya beat Central College, Anuradhapura by 157 runs in their Under 19 Division one tournament game that was played at Prison Grounds in Mahara.

Central College was unable to surpass the 263 made by the hosts as they were bowled out for 169 making Prabhath Buddhika the batsman who top scored with 33 runs. Pruthuvi Rusara claimed a five wicket haul.

Gurukula College added another 182 runs and declared their 2nd innings setting a target of 276 for the visitors, which they could not reach as Gurukula bowlers, led by Malindu Viduranga curtailed the opposition for just 119 runs.

Nalanda College, Colombo vs President’s College Kotte

Nalanda College recorded a high-scoring first- innings victory over President’s College, Kotte in their Group D match at Campbell Place.

President’s College’ formidable 376 constructed by Mohommed Rifaz (92) and Chamod Wickramasooriya (87) was not sufficient to defend Nalandians’ reply as they went on to score expensive 441 runs for their first innings.

Nalandians consumed 111.5 overs to reach the total as Dilshan Suraweera top-scored with 89 while Kavindu Bandara remained unbeaten on 84.

St.Sylvester’s College, Kandy hosted Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa in their Under 19 Division one tournament game at Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium which ended up in favour of the visitors.

Vesters’ batting first were confined to a cheap 104 runs and the visitors replied with 153. Right-hander Praveen Dilanka slammed a half-ton for the visitors while opening pace bowler Thusith De Soyza dismissed half of the side from Wennappuwa.

At the end of second day’s play, Vesters went on to reach 127 for the loss of eight. Skipper Malith Premathilake’s 32 was the highest individual score for the hosts. Praveen Dilanka and Roshen Fernando shared 7 wickets among them.

Zahira College, Colombo vs Maris Stella College, Negambo

Maris Stella College defeated a strong Zahira College team on first-innings in their drawn match which concluded at Zahira grounds on Friday.

Maris Stella’s reply of 265 which comprised a knock of 81 runs by Avantha Silva was too good for the hosts’ whose total was only 240 in their 1st innings. Sajith Sameera and Ishan Samsudeen shared four wickets apiece for the hosts.

Mighty Zahirians’ second innings batting was more overwhelming as at the end of day two, they were 311 for the loss of four that included two great tons made by Azlan Samsudeen and Sajith Sameera.
