My Dad, My Superstar to commence this weekend

A premier league for the veteran cricketers which will grant an opportunity for them to represent their kids, is to commence on the 23rd of March 2019.

The tournament aims to inspire the next generation with a brand of cricket past cricketers played in their days. The organizers state that every player who plays the tournament will represent either their school or their kid’s school in the tournament.

The tournament will feature 18 schools captained by following veteran players.

  • Trinty College – Nilantha Rathnayaka
  • Ananda College – Avishka Gunawardena
  • Nalanda College – Hemantha Devapriya
  • Mahinda College – Upul Chandana
  • Richmond College – Chamila Gamage
  • Thomas’ College – Mahinda Halangoda
  • St. Anne’s College – Lanka de Silva
  • St. Joseph’s College – Chaminda Vaas
  • St. Peter’s College – Roy Dias  
  • Maliyadeva College – Ajith Ekanayake
  • Royal College – Sumithra Warnakulasooriya
  • Isipathana College –Nuwan Zoysa
  • Rahula College – Pramodya Wickramasinghe
  • D.S. Senanayake College – Hashan Tillakaratne
  • Prince of Wales College – Darshana Gamage
  • St. Anthony’s College – Sajith Fernando
  • St. Sebastian’s College – Heshan de Mel,
  • Combined Schools XI – Tillakaratne Dilshan

The tournament will be played in 3 groups with 6 teams in each group. This is a slightly different tournament where 3 finals will be played for 3 different trophies. Each team will play 2 round robin league matches. Each group’s top teams will play for the ‘Super-dads Trophy’, the second placed teams will play for the ‘Champion-dads Trophy’ and the third placed teams will play for the ‘Challenger-dads Trophy’. Six semi-finals will be played amongst the teams and the three finals will be played on the 7th of April at Moratuwa De Soysa Stadium. The finals are scheduled to be played from earlier in the day to the night under lights.

Sri Lanka’s veteran cricketers eagerly look forward to hitting the grounds again after so many years. But, for an unusual cause this time. The tournament will feature some of the legendary names like Arjuna Ranatunga, Chaminda Vaas, Hashan Tillakaratne and so on. The World-Cup-winning captain, Ranatunga acts also as a mentor of the tournament while Aravinda de Silva will be a co-mentor for the tournament. Ravindra Pushpakumara has been appointed as the Tournament Director.

But even more we want to use this tournament as a way of educating young cricketers, specially schoolboys about drug menace which has spread through society and values of discipline in today’s generation.” – Arjuna Ranatunga

The tournament will certainly light up interest among the present generation as well as the fans of that victorious 1996 World Cup team. The tournament represents a great opportunity for the youngsters to witness some of the best cricketers from the past era who played the game in the Isle and for the die-hard fans from the 90s to cherish their memories watching their childhood superstars in action once again.
