Sujatha Vidyalaya, Nugegoda and Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo will battle it out in the inaugural ‘Battle of the Golds’ Netball Encounter for the Motwani Challenge Shield on the 29th of March.
Sri Lanka Netball soars to top 20 in World Rankings
After a successful year of competition…..
A media briefing was held today (21st March) at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute to inform the media about the encounter.
The Challenge Shield is named after Mrs. Clara Motwani who was the Principal of both Visakha Vidyalaya and Sujatha Vidyalaya. She served at Visakha for 12 years and at Sujatha for 23 years. She was the first Principal of Sujatha Vidyalaya.
The idea of having an annual Netball Encounter was initiated by Sujatha Vidyalaya, who will host the encounter this year, and Visakha Vidyalaya welcomed the idea of honouring one of their greatest Principals.
Both current Principals, Mrs. Sandamali Aviruppola of Visakha Vidyalaya and Mrs. Pushpa Kalubowila of Sujatha Vidyalaya expressed the importance of having an encounter between two schools, especially girls’ schools. It will hopefully also set a precedent to other schools to take this path, given that Netball is a popular sport among girls’ schools.

Visakha Vidyalaya will be captained by Upani Rupasinghe while Lilasha Managoda will captain Sujatha Vidyalaya.

Race Course Stadium will be the venue for the inaugural encounter which will be held on 29th March from 9.00am onwards. In addition to the U19 encounter there will be a U17 encounter as well.
