The Sri Lankan powerlifting team which participated in the Asian Pacific Classic and Equipped Powerlifting Championship which was held in Gold Coast Australia, concluded the event on a high as they managed to win 8 medals in the Classic category.
Earlier, in the Equipped category, Sri Lanka made history when they were adjudged the overall Open Men’s Champions and went on to collect a total of 11 medals which included national record breaking performances from Marian de Zoysa and Ransilu Jayathilaka.

Carrying on the good from the equipped category where she managed to break 4 national records, Marian De Zoysa went on to win Bronze in the Women’s Classic 72 Kg Open category clearing a total weight of 337.5Kg. She squatted 125Kg with a bench press of 55Kg and a dead lift of 157Kg to secure her second medal of the competition.

Young powerlifter Shehani Christeen who Gold in the Equipped category secured Silver in the Women’s Classic 84+ Kg Junior competition clearing 260Kg in total. She squatted 100Kg with a bench press of 50Kg and a dead lift of 110Kg.
Pradeep Kumara won his second Gold in Australia competing in the Men’s Classic 59kg Open clearing a total weight of 555Kg which included a Squat of 100Kg, Bench 50Kg and Deadlift 110Kg. Ransilu managed a total weight of 722.5Kg which included a Squat of 277Kg, Bench 140Kg and Deadlift 310Kg. Vikum Perera who is an upcoming young powerlifter won silver in the Men’s Classic 105kg Junior category clearing a total weight of 540Kg. He squatted 180Kg with a bench press of 105Kg and a dead lift of 220Kg to secure his second medal of the competition.
The youngest competitors of the Sri Lankan contingent, Nivendra Silva and Kakolya Janmod were yet again impressive as they managed to end up on the podium in the classic competition as well. Nivendra added to his Gold medal in the equipped category as he went on to win the Gold in the Men’s Classic 120+kg Sub Junior category clearing a total weight of 507.5Kg. Nivendra squatted 180Kg with a bench press of 120Kg and a dead lift of 192Kg. Despite clearing the same exact weight of 507.5Kg Kakolya Janmod competing in Men’s Classic 105kg Sub Junior category had to be satisfied with a Silver medal. Janmod squatted 182Kg with a bench press of 105Kg and a dead lift of 215Kg. Not to be undone by the young blood in the team the veteran Hiran Fernando won Gold in the Men’s Classic 93kg Masters event. Hiran cleared 595Kg in the event which included a squat of 240Kg, Bench 130Kg Dead lift 220Kg.
Despite the lack of publicity and support from the authorities the powerlifters have yet again delivered on their promise of achieving wins for the country in the International arena and have made the Island nation proud.
