A brilliant back-to-the-wall innings by Theivendram Dinoshan helped St John’s College gain the upper hand on Day 1 of the 113th Battle of the North at the Jaffna Central College grounds.
After winning the toss, Jaffna Central skipper Selvarasa Mathusan decided to put the visitors in to bat first. His decision proved to be the right one, as his bowlers managed to keep picking up wickets at regular intervals. Iyalarasan Kamalarsa stuck repeatedly with the new ball as the Johnian batting line-up crumbled under the pressure.
Amongst the top 5, only Christy Thanujan got to double figures (18). However, Murfin Abinash and Dinoshan put together a resurrecting act but Abinash lost his patience at the brink of lunch and skied a slog sweep off the bowling of Viyasakanth to give the hosts the breakthrough they wanted. The very next ball cost them another wicket, which had them in big trouble, having lost 7 wickets going into lunch.
Dinoshan was the only hope for the visitors but he was running out of partners at the other end. Soon he was forced to face most of the deliveries with the last man by his side. Once he reached his half century, he started to up the ante. Just like how, Vishwa Fernando supported Kusal Perera in the recent Sri Lanka v South Africa Test matches, Anton Saraan gave solid support to Dinoshan who batted with utmost ease. He stroked 11 boundaries and 2 sixes in his innings. Unfortunately, he missed out on a big match ton when he edged one to the keeper off Viyaskanth, just 2 runs short of the milestone.
The Johnians had the ideal start to the post tea session, with their hero with the bat, Dinoshan striking with the very first ball of the innings. Jaffna Central straight away went on to the back foot as they began a ‘blockathon’, trying to get through the day. Balarupan Inthujan and Iyalarasan blocked and blocked until Inthujan finally tried to cut and edged one straight to first slip off the bowling of Dinoshan. Even though the visitors got the opening they couldn’t find another breakthrough before stumps.
