SLTB through to semi-finals with a draw

Moragasmulla SC’s chances of qualifying for the final four was dented with a 1-1 draw against SLTB SC in the Premier League Division 1 week 3 of the Super Six round played at Sugathadasa Stadium Colombo.

Police SC huffed and puffed but finally managed to win with the last shot of the game…

Both teams came into the game with equal opportunity of progressing to the final 4 of the competition. Moragasmulla had 1 point in 2 games whereas SLTB had 3 after 2 games. A win for Moragasmulla and other results going their way would result in both teams reaching the last 4 along with Police SC and Serendib SC.

The first minutes of the game was pedestrian as neither team wanted to take on each other as the stakes were high. In the 5th minute S. Suranga the keeper of SLTB made a mess of a routine kick as he dragged his shot and found K.C. Chathuranga of Moragasmulla.

Chathuranga’s return kick was partially saved as Suranga rebounded the ball into the path of on rushing Robin Jeremie who kicked over with the goal at his mercy.

With the let off SLTB were first to settle down and found space behind the defence of Moragasmulla with attacking crosses coming from both wings.

Chamara Jayaweera taking a free kick for SLTB almost gave the lead as his shot was bizarrely fumbled by keeper L.P Perera and the ball bounced off the post to be collected once again by the keeper.

Against the run of play Moragasmulla did take the lead through Robin Jeremie who was left with the task of a tap in after some good work in the right flank by W.P Sakulada.

Despite a goal down SLTB played the better football keeping possession and threatening to score with every move. Chamara Jayaweera was at the end of good crosses on several occasions however not able to convert any of the opportunities.

Despite several attempts by SLTB, Moragasmulla SC was resilient in defence as the referee blew for half time with SLTB ruining their missed chances.

Start of the second half SLTB was as fluent as in the first half S. Sanjeewa getting a shot away with a neat turn missed the upright narrowly.

The follow up play by Chamara Jayaweera came close to equalize as once again the upright came as the savior for Moragasmulla.

S.Suranga then made a crucial save to deny Robin Jeremie from close range. The resulting follow up play SLTB equalized with a defensive error gifting the ball to S.Sanjeewa to tap in from close range.

With a last four spot certain with a draw SLTB slowed down the pace of the game thus giving opportunities to Moragasmulla to push forward.

With time ticking on it was Moragasmulla pushed for a winner as SLTB had to concentrate on their defences. Suranga was kept busy in the SLTB goal in the final minutes of the game.
