Gamini wins SSC open title
Two countries of the wheelchair corps were honoured at the SSC Open Wheelchair Tennis Tournament 2019 of the ITF future series. The championship was played off at the SSC open tennis courts with over 32 players from 6 countries held from the 20th February to 23rd February.
The men’s singles final favourites were 2017 title winner Gamini Dissanayake and his opponent was the Asian para games bronze medalist Suresh Ranjan Darmasena. Asian para games medalist, Suresh Ranjan Darmasena led Gamini Dissanayaka in the first sets 2/4 however Gamini Dissanayaka turned the game around and the scores levelled at 5/5. 2017 title holder kept his momentum on a high note to end the first set scores reading as 7/5. Second set of the game Suresh Ranjan Darmasena had the first point on to the scorecard. Gamini Dissanayaka equalized the scores 1/1.The second point was scored by Suresh Ranjan Darmasena Once again the former title winner proved that he has experience & talent to grab the points in any situation that opponent leads and he had two points for his scorecard and it read as 3/2 in favour of Gamini Dissanayake. Suresh Ranjan Darmasena was struggling with an injury so he decided to retired from the game. Gamini Dissanayake won the title after 2 years.
Gamini Dissanayaka spoke to ThePapare.com and described his game
“I did my practice sessions well and worked hard for this tournament. When the opponent led the game I think I need to break the game and there is no hurry to end the game and I need to take my time then opponent will get lazy and I can easily win the game. My target is to achieve a big win at the World Cup or Para Olympic”
The men’s doubles final title encounter favourites were Mohamad Yusshazwan BIN YUSUF (MAS) / Abu Samah BORHAN (MAS) Para Olympic two time bronze medalist D S R DHARMASENA (SRI) / R.A.L.S. RANAWEERA (SRI). Due to the injury Suresh Ranjan Darmasena of Sri Lanka decided to give a walkover to the Malaysian team.
