Two vital Kandy SC players, Srinath Sooriyabandara and Ganuka Dissanayake will miss the rest of the Dialog Rugby League season due to injuries sustained at the concluded couple of matches.

Srinath Sooriyabandara has re-injured his clavicle in the match against Police SC while Ganuka Dissanayake, the prop-forward, will sit out the rest of the season due a shoulder muscle tear sustained in the same match.

Previously the injury had kept Sooriyabandara out of the third leg of the Asian Rugby 7s series with the Tuskers forced to play the crucial semifinal and the 3rd place play-off without their skipper. He recovered to come off the bench at Police Park only to re-injure himself.

The shoulder injury for Ganuka Dissanayake was minor when the season started and Kandy opted to bring him off the bench. Things eventually got worse for the prop-forward as the season progressed.

The injury for Sooriyabandara occurred when the 30 -year-old fell on his shoulder during their final group stage game against Hong Kong, sustaining damage to his shoulder and clavicle. He was rushed to hospital for treatment but was cleared of immediate danger initially. Dissanayake, on the other hand, landed on his shoulder while scrummaging to dislocate his shoulder.

Speaking to ThePapare.com Kandy Assistant Coach Fazil Marija said the following “We have a few injuries but they will return soon except for Soori and Panda (Dissanayake) which are critical and I don’t think they can play the rest of the season as well.”

Sooriyabandara has emerged as one of the genuine leaders in the Sri Lanka Sevens squads over the last number of seasons, and such is his worth to the sevens circuit that any injury would leave the country’s hopes in uncertainty.

Dissanayake is also known for heroics in scrummaging and will definitely be one of the first names to be written down when selecting the playing XV.

With the injury, both the scrum half and the prop forward for Kandy Sports Club will miss the rest of the season.
