St. Peter’s College and President’s College recorded wins as six games of the Singer U19 Division One tournament were played today, 8th January.
St. Peter’s College, Colombo vs Lumbini College, Colombo
St. Peter’s College won the toss and elected to bat first at their own backyard. The hosts were at a comfortable position by the end of day one as they had posted 294 runs and held the visitors down for 115 for 6.
Lumbini College managed 31 more runs this morning (8th Jan) as they were restricted for 146 runs. Ravishka Wijesiri kept up his good work as he topped the batting with 45 runs while the right arm medium paceman Shivan Perera picked up a five-fer.
It was not a long day at work for the boys from Bambalapitiya as Lumbini College did not last too long in the second-innings either. They were scrapped off for 95 runs with an innings and 53-run win for St. Peter’s College. Kanishka Maduwantha was the pick of the bowlers in the second-innings as he picked up a five-fer with his sharp left-arm spin.

The traditional encounter was worked off at Welagedara grounds, Kurunegala with St. Mary’s College playing host. St. Mary’s won the toss and elected to put runs on board first. They managed 128 runs for their first-innings with Maleesha Senanayake being the top-scorer with 23 runs. Off-spinner Dinith Nelumdeniya captured 5 wickets for 40 runs.
In reply, the visitors posted 219 runs in 57.3 overs. Akila Roshan made a valiant 82 while Sineth Weerasuriya picked up 4 for 49 runs.
St. Mary’s batsmen misfired yet again as they scored only 113 runs in the second-innings. It was Dineth Nelumbeniya again who shone with the ball as he picked up his second five-fer of the game.
President’s College needed 23 runs to win which they went past with 9 wickets in hand.

St. Joseph’s College met St. Sebastian’s College in a traditional game between the two schools at Moratuwa. Batting first, St. Sebastian’s College scored 232 runs for their first-innings. Nishtha Abilash top-scored with 88 runs. Left-arm spinner Shalinda Senevirathne was spot-on as he picked up 6 wickets.
St. Joseph’s College posted a solid 320 runs as a reply. Senior-man Dineth Jayakody scored an enterprising 89 runs while stand-in captain Johanne de Zilva fared with an elegant 80 runs. Nuwanidu Fernando picked up 3 for 42 to top the bowling card.
The game came to a tame draw as the Moratuwa boys opted to bat time. They were at 196 for 6 by the close of play. Sukitha Prasanna hit an unbeaten 74 to see through the day. Shalinda Senevirathne was yet again exceptional with the ball as he hurried himself to a five-fer which made it a 11-wicket haul in the game.

Isipathana College struggled on their way to 154 runs against the visiting Dharmasokians. The host won the toss and opted to bat first. Ashen Gunawardana made 41 runs while the visiting skipper Dinuka Dilshan, picked up 3 wickets for 14 runs.
Isipathana captain, Madushika Sandaruwan took the matters to his hand as he dismantled the Dharmasoka batting from one end. Dharmasoka College managed only 125 runs in the first innings. Sandaruwan picked 6 wickets for just 14 runs.
Isipathana College came up with a surprising declaration in the second innings when they withdrew their batsmen at 133 for 9 with over a session to go. Dharmasoka vice-captain Kavindu Nadeeshan supported his senior by picking up 4 wickets for 47 runs.
The boys from Ambalangoda batted responsibly in the second-innings as they managed to draw the game. The visitors were at 125 runs for the loss of 5 wickets by the close of play.

From a steady start on day one, D.S. Senanayake College scripted the rest of the innings for perfection as they were even on the verge of an outright win.
D.S. Senanayake College posted a humongous 401 runs against the 307 runs De Mazenod had scored in their first-innings. The star of D.S. Senanayake, Muditha Lakshan kept on shining as he painted wonderful 120 with the bat. Abishek Liyanarachchi also made a colourful 114 at the top of the order to give D.S. the kind of boost they got.
De Mazenod were completely at sea in the second-innings as Methushan Kumara and Muditha Lakshan strangled them down to 96 for 9, sharing all those wickets between them. The pair picked up 15 wickets out of 20 in the game.
Unfortunately, the host did not have enough time left to pick up the lone wicket as the game ended in a draw.
