St. Benedict’s College, Colombo ended their tournament fixture of the Singer U19 Division I tournament 2018/19 against Maris Stella College, Negombo today, 5th January, at Kotahena. Three other games were also played today around the Island.

The home skipper won the toss and elected to bowl first on a greenish surface, hoping to purchase early wickets in the first hour. Maris Stella batsmen got off to a decent start, but a middle-order collapse crashed them down to 199 runs in the first-innings from 174 for 5.

Skipper Ashan Fernando lead from the front as he top-scored for the Negombo school with an elegant 65 runs. Amantha Perera and the opener, Chathura Anuradha, made useful contributions with 44 and 40 runs respectively.

The mystery spinner, Maheesh Theekshana of St. Benedict’s College, who was put under pressure by Ashan Fernando early-on found his rhythm later in the day as he ripped off 5 wickets of the visitors.

The host was an absolute batting struggle as they were strangled for just 99 runs. The gutsy fast-bowler Aveesha Keshan picked up a five-fer with some steep bounce and sharp seam movement. The pateint 127-ball 38 was the top-score of the innings.

The follow-on was enforced by the visitors and the host was not in any better position in that either. The Benedictines were undone for 117 runs yet again with a target of 18 runs for the boys from Negombo.

Zahira College won the toss and elected to field first in a game that ended a tame draw at Zahira College Grounds. Mahanama College scored 228 runs for their first-innings. Skipper, Pathum Boteju scored an unbeaten 93 runs. Mohammad Salsa was the pick of the bowlers with 6 wickets to his name.

Zahira College, in reply, batted out the rest of the game as Mohammad Salsa and Dilsara Chamoda engaged in a batting-marathon. The duo stood unbeaten by the end with scores of 132 runs and 114 runs respectively. Zahira College made a mammoth 387 runs by the close of play.

In reply, the host managed only 127 runs for their first-innings. The top-score was the 33 made by Ranidu de Silva. Speedster Kalana Perera enjoyed a five-fer giving away 46 runs.

In the second-innings, the Thomians scored 180 runs in 43.2 overs. Skipper, Sithara Hapuhinna was the pick of the batting with a half-century to his name. The Nalanda captain, Lakshitha Rasanjana bagged an astonishing 7 wickets.
