Angelo Mathews out of action for four weeks

Scans have revealed a grade two strain in Angelo Mathews’ left hamstring, ruling him out of the limited overs leg against New Zealand next month.

Angelo Mathews sustained this injury yesterday, during the fourth day’s play in the 2nd Test against New Zealand at Christchurch.

Mathews who retired hurt, after hobbling through for 2.4 overs since he went down holding his left groin before tea on day 4, didn’t return to bat on day 5 either.

He was taken for scans yesterday which revealed his current condition.Angelo had a scan last night, and it’s a grade two hamstring strain”, said Captain Dinesh Chandimal after the Test. He also confirmed the ruling out of Mathews, “The physio said he’s out for 4 weeks”.

Angelo Mathews will also miss the Australian Test series which begins on the 24th of January and is expected to return for the South African tour which begins on the 13th of February.

Mathews being recalled for the ODI squad to play New Zealand after he was dropped from the ODI squad which played England at home once again has created an obvious doubt on his fitness, which also was the reason behind his axing following Sri Lanka’s disastrous Asia Cup campaign this year.

Mathews who was expected to return as an all-rounder (He has not bowled in limited overs cricket since December 2017) for the ODIs has also raised major concerns over his role in Sri Lanka’s plans for the World Cup which starts in late May 2019.

A replacement for Angelo Mathews in the ODI squad is yet to be named. The first ODI is scheduled to be played on the 3rd of January at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
