The inaugural Mahela-Sanga Challenge Trophy, the traditional encounter between Nalanda College and Trinity College came to a close today, 29th December, in Colombo while 5 other games of the Singer U19 Division One Cricket Tournament 2018/19 also ended today.

Following a ceremonial start to the traditional encounter the two maestros, Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara joined the two captains at the center for the toss, at the beautiful Nalanda grounds. Lakshitha Manasinghe of Nalanda College won the toss and elected to field first. Trinity College scored 165 runs in the first-innings with the skipper Pubudu Bandara top-scoring with 30 runs with the bat. The spin-twins, Lakshitha Manasinghe and Kaveesha Madurapperuma picked up 3 wickets each.

In reply Nalanda College was at 123 for the loss of 7 wickets at the end of day-one. Coming out to bat under pressure on day-two, Nalanda College was toppled within the first hour of the day for 145 runs. Dilhara Polgampola looked positive at the center but did not get any support as he perished for 32 runs, Kavishka Senadeera troubled the Nalanda batsmen as he recorded a 5-wicket haul.
It was a brief second-innings by Trinity College as the hosts managed to bowl them out for 145 runs. Agbo Amarasinghe got off to a good start but failed to capitalize on it. He made 26 runs. It was Chanuka Kumarasinghe who showed some intent with the bat but ended his knock at 32 runs. The spin duo kicked in again with four more wickets each taking their tally to 7 each.
Nalanda College was given a 175-run target to chase down with about 31 overs to go in the day. They were troubled at the start of their second-innings as they lost Polgampola at 20 run on the board. But in-came the skipper who put up a gem of a knock under extreme pressure to take Nalanda to 127 runs at the end of the day. Manasinghe scored a fighting 54 runs for a losing cause. Kavishka Senadeera grabbed the spotlight once again with the ball as he wrapped a match-bag 11 wickets. The off-spinner traumatized the Colombo boys as he ripped 6 of them apart in the second-innings. Trinity College recorded an absolutely exciting win as the game was open for both teams till the last half an hour.

TRINITY COLLEGE WON BY 47 RUNS
St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy vs St. Joseph’s College, Colombo
Coming out to bat at 115/3 on day-two, St. Joseph’s College went on to make 246 runs for their first-innings, tightening up their grip on the game. Dineth Jayakody hit 47 runs for St. Joseph’s College while Charith Rajaguru was the pick of the bowling with 2 for 26 runs.

St. Sylvester’s College had posted 123 in the first-innings. The boys from Kandy were undone for 144 runs in their next outing as Shalinda Senevirathne ran through the batting picking up 4 wickets to his name. He had already picked up a fifer in the first-innings. Usindu Nisansaka top-scored with 44 runs.
St. Joseph’s chased down the 24-run target with ease and won the game by 8 wickets.

The group ‘C’ game was played at Uyanwatte grounds, Matara. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. They posted 126-runs for their first-innings. Vinuka Rubasinghe scored 36 runs while Chethaka Denuwan accounted for 3 wickets for 22 runs. Shashika Dulshan also picked 3 wickets for 33 runs.

St. Servatius’ College in reply, hit 238 runs for the loss of 5 wickets and decided to declare the innings. It was again Chethaka Denuwan and Shashika Dulshan who shone with the bat too as the duo hit fifty each. Just the 2 wickets of Duvindu Manishka was the only noteworthy performance from Mahanama bowlers.
Though Mahanama made up for their mistakes in the second-innings, that was still not enough as St. Servatius’ College departed with first-innings points.
Mahanama College scored 151 runs in the second innings for the loss of 6 wickets when the game ended. Vinuka Rubasinghe top-scored once again with 56 runs to his name.

Thurstan College skipper, Sandaru Dias, invited the hosting D.S. Senanayake College to bat first. This traditional encounter was worked off at Dombagoda where D.S. Senanayake College posted 193 runs on board for the first-innings. Right-handed Muditha Lakshan, the Sri Lanka U19 squad member, hit 46 runs for his school while Dasun Jayawardena kicked in with 3 wickets for 40 runs.
Trying to better the 193 runs of D.S. Senanayake College, the thurstanites put up another ordinary show as they fell short of it by 10 runs. Shalaka Bandara and Methushan Kumara were the two top-performers from both schools as they managed 40 runs and 3 wickets respectively.

D.S. Senanayake College extended their lead with another 171 runs as they declared the second-innings with 2 wickets intact. Teron Baskeran missed an half-century by 1 run while Bawantha Jayasinghe topped the bowling chart with 3 wickets to his name.
With a 181-run target to chase down, Thurstan brought the game to a tamed draw by batting out the rest of the day without losing any wicket.

On day-two, Kevin Perera and Amantha Perera who came out to bat at 52 and 37 runs respectively, did not hang around for too long as both of them ended their innings at 67 and 57 respectively. Maris Stella batting to better the 128-runs scored by Maliyadeva College for their first-innings, went on to make 203 runs. Brian Karunanayake and Maduranga Naveen both picked up 3 wickets each.
Maliyadeva College added another 199 runs to their account as Supun Sumanarathne scored a brilliant 90 to make amends. Pasindu Ushetti was once again among wickets as he added another one to his 5-wickets tally.The game came to a draw as Maris Stella earned first-innings honours.

Wesley College got the better of St. Anne’s college in the group ‘D’ encounter between the two schools at Campbell Park today. The hosts won the toss and invited the boys from Kurunegala to bat first. St. Anne’s College suffered a trauma seeing themselves bat as the highest score made by a St. Anne’s batsman was the 20 runs of Lasith Warnasooriya. Movin Subasinghe was the spearhead of Wesley College as he recorded 4 wickets for just 12 runs.
Wesley College was not very impressive with the bat either as they fell off for 126 runs. Skipper Shenal Dangalle topped the batting card with 68 runs while Pasindu Thennakoon ran through the batting with figures of 6 for 21.
The visitors were sloppy with the bat once again as they managed only 115 runs in there second-innings. Muiz Rafeel scored 31 runs for St. Anne’s while Rahul Gunasekara picked up 3 wickets for 24 runs.
The 85-runs target set for hosts looked very steep as there weren’t a lot of time left in the game. In-came the two power-houses of Wesley College, Movin Subasinghe and Shenal Dangalle, who saw them go pass the mark with all their wickets intact in just 6.5 overs. The pair fired the bowlers to every corner of Campbell park as they made 47 and 37 runs respectively.
