Lakshitha and Chamindu hand Nalanda a comfortable win

Four games of the Singer U19 Division I Tournament came to a close today, 21st December, with a massive win for Nalanda College. Three games ended in draws while another one got underway at Matara.

Nalanda College, Colombo vs Dharmapala College, Pannipitiya

Nalanda College won the toss and elected to field first at the newly built Dharmapala Grounds in Pannipitiya. The hosts were taken aback when they were bowled out by the Nalandians for 145 runs in their first-innings. Chamindu Wijesinghe picked up 4 wickets for the visitors while Shevon Nadeeja (30) was the only batsman who managed something noteworthy with the bat.

Skipper, Lakshitha Manasinghe orchestrated an unbeaten ton while shepherding his men at the other end to take Nalanda College to 288 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. The budding all-rounder Raveen de Silva put brakes on the wickets column as he stood unbeaten at the other end with 52 when they declared. At top of the bowling chart for the hosts was the skipper, Chamindu Samarasinghe with 3 wickets to his name.

Once again, Wijesinghe found his rhythm right as the right-arm seamer captured 5 scalps in the second-innings making it 9 in the match. Right-handed Tharindu Sandaruwan’s resistant half-century went in vain as Dharmapala College was bowled out for just 160 runs.

Nalanda College was given a target of 20 runs to victory which they chased down fondly with all their wickets intact.

Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa vs S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia

Unstoppable Nipun Dhananjaya dispatched the bowlers to all parts of the St. Sebastian’s Grounds in Katuneriya, as he heaped 165 runs to his name. But, it was not the case with the rest of his team who had a miserable day with the bat. Joseph Vaz College, who were put into bat first, scored 279 runs for their first-innings.

A collective effort from the Thomians took them past the hosts in the first-innings of this drawn encounter. Thishan Munasinghe top-scored with 66 runs while the other regular performers Dellon Peiris (54), Umayanga Suwariz (50*) and Shalin de Mel (50) all hit half-centuries. Nipun Dhananjaya was the best of the bowlers too for Joseph Vaz College with figures of 2 for 79 runs.

Mahanama College, Colombo vs Maris Stella College, Negombo

After winning the toss, Mahanama skipper, Pathum Boteju, decided to put runs on board first at the Irrigation Grounds, Ratmalana. Leading his team from the front, he hit an unbeaten 40 in the first innings while Bishan Mendis and Pawantha Weerasinghe also hit 30-plus scores to take Mahanama College to 198 runs. Leg-spinner, Kevin Perera teased the Mahanamians with the ball as he managed to bag 4 wickets for Maris Stella College.

For the second time in the season, Maris Stella College surprised with poor batting as they were wrapped up for just 101 runs. At least, they were much better than the last time! Chathura Anuradha top-scored with 25 runs. Danuka Nimhana was the chief architect of the assault as the left-arm seamer recorded 6 wickets against his name.

Mahanama College hit 109 runs in the second-innings for the loss of 4 wickets as the game came to a draw.

Trinity College, Kandy vs Richmond College, Galle

The game was played at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy. Trinity College, who were put to bat first, scored 251 runs for their first-innings. Umair Raizan was the top-scorer for Trinity College with 62 runs to his name while Pubudu Bandara and Ashan Lokukatiya hit half-centuries too. The 15-year-old seamer Kalpa Nethsara picked 3 wickets for 40 runs while the Sri Lanka U19 cap, Sandun Mendis also picked up 3 scalps.

The visitors managed only 166 runs in their first innings. Lean right-arm speedster, Ruvin Peiris, picked up 4 wickets for 27 runs while Kalindu Adithya was the top-scorer for Richmond College with 38 runs to his name.

Pubudu Bandara hit his second fifty of the game as Trinity College were at 136 runs for the loss of 5 wickets when the game came to an end.

Wesley College, Colombo vs St. Thomas’ College, Matara

The rain-affected game only saw 38 overs in it’s first day of play at Uyanwatte Grounds, Matara. Batting first, Wesley College were at 95 for 3 at the close of play. Two set batsmen Buddima Wijesundara and Movin Subasinghe were at the crease with 42 and 31 runs respectively. The game will resume tomorrow for day-two.
