After two days of exciting action in the National and Junior National Aquatic Championship, reigning champions Killer Whale and 2017 Runners-up Visakha Vidyalaya remain on course for this year’s National titles.

The final swimming tournament for the year the National and Junior National Championship commenced yesterday at the Sugathadasa Stadium with the participation of over 3000 swimmers representing schools and clubs.
Men’s Defending National champs, Killer Whale Aquatics started strong on day 1 with 2 Gold medals and 2 Silver medals with Kyle Abeysinghe starring for them. Young Abeysinghe went on to win two more events for KWA by the end of the 2nd day, expanding their overall lead over Ananda College.
Kavindra and Kyle grab Gold for KWA – National Day 1
Kyle took first place in the Boys 200m Freestyle event with a time of 1:57.31 minutes, passing fellow KWA teammate Kavindra Nugawela who clocked 1:58.08 minutes to grab silver.
Killer Whale Aquatics also dominated the Boys 400m Individual Medley winning the triple threat through Kyle Abeysinghe (4:59.33), Arukshan Pavalachandran (5:02.66) and Amjad Hassan (5:04.50).
The academy led by the great Manoj Abeysinghe dominated the Boys Relays, finishing on top of the Boys 800m Freestyle Relay and the Boys 200m Freestyle Relay; The National records of these events are also currently held by the swim team of Killer Whale Aquatics.
They won gold in the Boys 800m Free Relay 8:26.69 minutes, beating out Ananda who finished in 8 minutes and 27.04 seconds. St. Joseph’s College finished third with 8:38.52 minutes.

In the Boys 200m Freestyle Relays, KWA swam the finals and won gold with a time of 1:41.00 flat. Gateway College Colombo finished second with the finals time of 1:42.88 minutes.
At the end of Day 2 Killer Whale Aquatics has earned themselves a comfortable lead in the Boys Team scores with 147 points. Ananda College follows far behind with 67 points while Gateway Colombo trails in third with 51.
2017 Girls’ Team Runners-up, Visakha Vidyalaya has had two promising days in the championship and find themselves leading the pack with 124 points. 20-year reigning All Island School’s champs, Mahamaya Girls College, Kandy stand at second with 65 points while Lyceum International School Wattala remain third with 52.
Visakha took Gold in the Girls 200m Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:56.62 minutes. In second place was Mahamaya Girls College clocking 2:03.50 minutes and Musaeus College in third with 2:04.22 minutes.

200m Backstroke champ, Ganga Senevirathe of Visakha could only muster up a Silver on the second day in the Girls 50m Backstroke (32.51sec). Vinoli Kaluarachchi got back at Ganga from her defeat yesterday, winning Gold clocking 31.97 seconds.
2018 Junior National Age Group Champion Amodya Dulshan of Nalanda College won 1 Gold and 1 Silver in his opening events. He claimed first place in the Boys U15 400m Individual Medley Relay with a time of 5:19.37 minutes. Dulshan narrowly missed out on Gold in the 50m Backstroke and settled with a Silver medal (29.98secs). The Gold was snatched by Adithya Perera of De Mazenod College clocking 29.55seconds.
The Nalanda College swim team claimed gold in the Boys’ 400m Freestyle with a time of 4:07.73 minutes. St. Peter’s College finished second in 4:10.24 minutes and Ananda College in third clocking 4:18.98 minutes.
The Juniors of Nalanda College have managed to end day 2 on top of the Boys Team standings with 77 points in total. St. Joseph’s College lag close behind with 66.5 points and Ananda College is tied at third with St. Peter’s College with 46 points each.
Lyceum International School Wattala top the Girls Team scores with a 11-point lead over Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya; Lyceum with 81 points and Sirimavo totaling 70. St. Bridget’s Convent and Visakha Vidyalaya come in at third and fourth with 56 and 50 points respectively.
