Akalanka Peiris of Sri Lanka fell short of qualifying for the final of the Men’s 100m Backstroke event in the swimming category at the Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games 2018.

Peiris participated in his opening event at this year’s Games, the Men’s 100m Backstroke, this morning and had a stellar start in his heat. He finished with a timing of 57.34 seconds, slower than his current National record of 56.99 seconds but fast enough to proceed as the 16th and final qualifier for the semifinals.
The youngest of the lot, Akalanka could only grab a 7th place finish in his semifinal heat, clocking 57.35 seconds. He swam the 50m in 27.45 seconds with a split of 0.55 seconds and finished 3.55 seconds behind the heat topper Kliment Kolesnikov of Russia.
Akalanka has his 50m Backstroke and the 50m Butterfly left in his stint at the YOG 2018. The 50m Backstroke is scheduled for the 10th October, Wednesday while his final event, the 50m Fly will be on the 11th October Thursday.
