Musaeus College managed to secure a fabulous victory over their rivals Ladies’ College after an unforgettable 48 – 4 win at the 15th Ladies’ – Musaeus Regatta 2018.
What a day it was for Mayanthi Weerakoon and her crew as the Musaeites clinched the LCMC Regatta title for the third consecutive time making it their fifth win in the 15 editions of this annual regatta.
It wasn’t a conventional regatta like the ones in the past, as the event was carried out on two days, starting Saturday 6th. Due to the stormy conditions that prevailed one the 1st evening, only 5 races were held forcing the organizers to shift the remaining 4 races to Sunday.

Senuri De Silva opened the winning gates for Musaeus after emerging victorious in ‘B’ Scull race that got the regatta underway. Next up were the Alwis’s – Maedhini and Binali, who added to the good start after beating the Ladies’ rowers in the ‘A’ Pair race. Musaeus were on a roll as Hashini Hettigoda continued the winning streak overcoming her opponent in the ‘A’ Scull race.
Sparking some hope for Ladies’ College was Ayani Perera along with Gabrielle Senanayake who won their team’s first race after beating Thamadansi Hewage and Thanushi Perera in the ‘B’ Pair race.
That was Ladies’ only win for the day as Musaeus kept getting better and better. Maedhini De Alwis and Senuri De Silva accumulated more points for Musaeus after finishing first in the ‘A’ Double Scull race.
In the Old Girls Fours race Musaeus saw off the Ladies’ challenge and continued their dominance in the final four races that were a must win for Ladies’ College, if they were to make a comeback on day 2. Unfortunately for them, the Musaeites were on top notch today as well, managing to win the majority of the races that were rowed.
The LC-ites started off on a positive note winning the ‘C’ Four race setting a new record timing of 3 minutes and 56 seconds through Nihara Chandrasena, Avini Amarasinghe, Keshia Varia, Tanita Goonethilake and Chiara Wijethilake. But, Thanushi Perera, Binuri Gunawardena, Hashini Hettigoda, Nethmini Sirimanne and Captain, Mayanthi Weerakoon managed to redeem themselves in the ‘B’ Four race winning it for the defending champions.
In the ‘B’ Double scull race Binuri Gunawardana and Nethmini Sirimanne secured a impressive victory for Musaeus setting a new record timing of 3 minutes and 58 seconds.
Adding the final nail to the coffin, once again the Musaeites came out on top winning the ‘A’ four race. It was Binali De Alwis, Maedhini De Alwis, Lishadi Mayadunna, Senuri De Silva and Mayanthi Weerakoon who did the honors.
And that did it for Musaeus College as the scores read 48 – 4 in favour of the girls in blue and yellow. It was a fantastic performance by the Musaeus College crew as they successfully rewrote history being the first team from the College to win three titles in a row.
