Team Galle stayed in thr hunt for a spot in the final on Sunday (02nd September) when they recorded a vital 38 run win over Team Dambulla at Pallekele this evening (29).

Galle register first win; Kandy succumb in another thriller.

Team Galle recorded their first win in the SLC T20 League beating Kandy by a mere 7-run margin…

Kusal Mendis’ attacking half century at the top of the order set Galle up for a big score, before their middle order lost its way thanks to some brilliant bowling from left arm orthodox bowler and Sri Lanka cap Amila Aponso.

Aponso had miserly figures of 3/22 in his quota of four overs as Galle were reduced to 122/6 in the 17th over. But teenager Jehan Daniel launched a vital counter attack towards the latter part of the innings making an unbeaten 24* off just 11 balls to guide Team Galle to a competitive 163/8.

None of the Dambulla batsmen other than Danushka Gunathilaka got going in the run chase as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Dushamantha Chameera and Dhananjaya de Silva bowled economical spells with the new ball for Galle as they choked Dambulla from the word go.

But it was Kasun Rajitha – introduced late into the attack- who did most of the damage with an impressive spell of T20 bowling capturing 4/28 in his four overs.

Gunathilaka continued to fight from one end before he was finally undone by Rajitha for 73, with celebrations kicking off in the Galle camp. The only other batsman to reach double figures was Ashan Priyanjan (11). He was also cleverly dismissed by Rajitha who has been impressive for Sri Lanka since the tour of West Indies earlier this year.

Sahan Arachchige also picked 2/32 in his four overs as Galle left themselves an outside chance of qualifying if they can win the next match by a considerable margin to improve their net run rate and hope Dambulla lose with a similar margin.
