The final 8 teams have cemented their place in the Quarter finals of the ‘Singer U17 Cricket Tournament for 2018, having earned their place after some hard fought and exciting matches in the Pre-Quarter finals.
The tournament kicked off in May featuring 74 teams in the first round on a league basis divided into 10 groups. It later came down to 32 teams divided into 8 groups. The matches were played at different venues all over the Island and were completed with 16 teams battling it out in the Pre-Quarter finals. And now we are down to the 8 teams who have earned promotion for the business end of the tournament.
St. Servatius College Matara who was crowned champions last year, failed to qualify for the second round this year. The second division schools strung up quite a few surprises as many of the ‘A division’ schools were knocked out from the group stages. Richmond College, Trinity College and St. Aloysius College Galle were big names in ‘A division’ cricket who were knocked out of the tournament after poor performances during the season. In addition St. Peter’s, Dharmaraja, Isipathana, Ananda, Prince of Wales and Thurstan were knocked out as well in the Pre-Quarter finals.
The pre-Quarter finals went down to the wire with teams like St. Joseph’s, St. Sebastian’s, and St. Anthony’s Wattala and Katugasthota winning by small margins. St. Joseph’s won against Isipathana by 2 wickets even though they were chasing a modest target. The tailenders saved St. Anthony’s Wattala against St. Peter’s, and St. Sebastian’s won their match against Thurstan by only 6 runs.
