Inaugural ICBT Inter-Campus Rugby 7’s to kick off this Saturday

12 Teams will compete at the Inaugural ‘ICBT Inter-Campus Rugby 7’s’ title this coming Saturday, the 25th of August at the Royal Complex.

At the media briefing held today (21st August), Chief Executive Officer of ICBT Campus Dr. Sampath Kannangara in his introductory speech stated ‘it is a great opportunity for young students who are unable to commit towards playing club rugby to get back into the game they love’.

Also speaking at the gathering, Dr. Jagath Alwis, Chairman of ICBT emphasized on the importance of extracurricular activities as you move forward in life. He also added that their long-term plan is to make this tournament an international tournament by inviting international students to come to Sri Lanka and compete for the championship.

“Next year we will make sure that this tournament will have participants from UK, Australia and other Asians countries. We will make sure that this tournament will be the biggest inter campus tournament in the region”Dr. Sampath Kannangara, CEO and Dean of ICBT.

ICBT officials have appointed Mr. Dilroy Fernando, former referee and well-known personality in Sri Lankan rugby as the tournament Director. Speaking to the media, Mr. Fernando praised ICBT for taking this initiative and stressed on the fact that Sri Lanka is lacking these kinds of tournaments which will ultimately help Sri Lanka Rugby grow into a giant in world rugby.

Furthermore he explained how the tournament will progress on Saturday. The 12 teams will compete for 3 Championships, Cup, Plate and Bowl. The 12 teams will be divided into 4 groups in the group stages. Thereafter the top two teams of each group will progress in to the Cup Quarter-Finals and the bottom team will progress to the Bowl Semi-Finals. The losers of the Cup Quarter-Finals will progress to Plate Semi-Finals while winners move on to Cup Semi-Finals and eventually the Cup Finals. The tournament will be held according to IRB Regulations and it will be officiated by referees from SLRFU. The groups and the teams are as follows;
