Sri Lanka Cricket to probe Danushka Gunathilaka incident

Danushka Gunathilaka’s suspension from all forms of cricket, pending inquiry, is related to an alleged sexual assault that occurred in the team hotel in the early hours on Sunday (July 22), according to an AFP report.

The alleged incident reportedly involves Gunathilaka’s acquaintance – a 26-year-old British passport-holder of Sri Lankan origin – who was accused of sexual assault by a Norwegian woman.

The British citizen “is under arrest and we are continuing our investigations,” a police official was quoted as saying by AFP. “A Norwegian tourist made the complaint of rape.” Even though the official confirmed that there was no allegation against Gunathilaka, SLC will launch its own inquiry against the batsman since he has been alleged to have breached the curfew.

On Sunday, the SLC had announced via a media release stating that Gunathilaka was suspended, pending inquiry, for violation of the ‘Player Code of Conduct’. Without divulging the reasons, the SLC statement said: “Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) decided to suspend Danushka Gunathilaka from all forms of international cricket for breaching the ‘Player Code of Conduct’, pending inquiry.

“The decision to suspend the player was taken following an initial inquiry conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket, after the team management reported that the player have violated the ‘Code of Conduct’.”

The latest incident is the third conduct-related misdemeanor involving Gunathilaka. The opener was handed a six-match ban from white-ball cricket – eventually reduced to three games – in October 2017. The opener was said to have skipped a training session after late night partying then, during the series against India.

He was also officially reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the ODI tri-series final in Mirpur, in January earlier this year, and consequently had one demerit point added to his disciplinary record.
