Cavani outshines Ronaldo in Uruguay win

Uruguay made their way into the quarter finals ending Portugal’s World Cup…

Uruguay were without their two-goal hero Edinson Cavani from their round of 16 match against Portugal due to an injury while France were at full strength after a morale boosting 4-3 win against Argentina.

Uruguay started off brightly creating a few chances early on. The early dominance was short lived as France quickly took charge. The first free kick of the day was swung just to the left of the goal by Antoine Griezmann while Paul Pogba advanced a shot towards the box but it went over the bar.

France was leading in possession but the Uruguayans held their defense, which had only conceded once dduring the tournament, together. The 19-year old Kylian Mbappe who impressed against Argentina, was held by the Trojans-like defence of Uruguay, which kept him out of the box.

However, the impressive defence of Uruguay soon came to a still when Raphael Varane scored a goal with a terrific header towards the left from an Antoine Griezmann free kick.

Soon after it needed a world class save from Hugo Lloris to deny a Martin Caceres header from another free-kick.

Half Time – Uruguay 0 – 1 France

Mbappe made a fast break but was let down by Griezmann just as the second half began. France earned a free kick again and Paul Pogba tried to take it from the 6-yard box but was unsuccessful.

Mbappe double knockout Argentina in a classic

Kylian Mbappe inspired France to a 4-3 rollercoaster victory over stubborn Argentina in their round…

Luis Suarez and Cristhian Stuani, worked the ball between them but Stuani did not help him out for a possible chance at the goal.

The second goal came for France as Fernando Muslera misjudged a swerving effort from Antoine Griezmann and could only half block it as it lopped over him and into the goal.

Cristian Rodriguez clipped Mbappe as he ran past him which aroused some drama in the field. Both the teams were triggered and the referee settled things down booking both Rodriguez and Mbappe. As the minutes ticked by Uruguay were unable to muster any sort of attack.
