Sri Lanka suffer knock-out blows

Four out of five Sri Lankan boxers received knockout blows as they made first round exits from the AIBA World Boxing Championships 2013 being held in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Gayan Jayaweera competing in the 56Kg bantam weight lost to his Finish opponent Matti Koota with the narrowest margin of one point on Thursday. 

The score read as 29-28 in favour of the Finish player at the end of three rounds. Earlier Suresh Pattiarachchi lost to Australia’s Andrew Melani in the 52Kg fly weight encounter after a close fight with scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 at the end of three rounds.

In the 60kg light weight Sisira Kumarasinghe had to bite the dust when Sims Kenneth of US recorded a fighting win against the Sri Lankan. The scores at the end of three rounds read as 30:25, 30:24 and 30:27 in favour of the US national.

Meanwhile Tharindu Madushanka who had a training stint in Kazakhstan crashed out from the first round when he was knocked out inside the first two minutes by Kvachatadze Zaal of Georgia in the 69Kg welter weight bout. 

Sri Lanka fielded five boxers for the world meet with Malith Prabashwara the only one left to compete. He will compete in the 49Kg light flyweight today. 

Interestingly no headgears were allowed in this year’s championship which was mandatory in the past.
