Malinga, Thisara, Udana & Shanaka picked in Global T20 Canada

The player draft for the inaugural Global T20 Canada was held yesterday(3), with four Sri Lanka players being picked for the same team, Montreal Tigers. 

Veteran Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga was already named as a marquee player for the tournament while plenty of international stars had put up their names ahead of the auction held yesterday.

Malinga was picked up by the Montreal Tigers in the 1st round of the auctions and it seems his influence saw the other three players in Thisara Perera, Isuru Udana and Dasun Shanaka being picked for the same team. Star West Indian all-rounder Sunil Narine was also picked up by the Montreal Tigers, while Sikandar Raza, Mohammad Hafeez and Denesh Ramdin were among other international players picked up for the Tigers.

Sri Lankan born Canadian Internationals Ruvindu Gunasekara and Srimantha Wijeratne who were involved in the recently concluded Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) domestic tournament, were also picked by the Vancouver Knights in the 10th and 11th rounds of the auction.

The biggest headlines in the lead up to the tournament were the return of Australian cricketers Steve Smith and David Warner, who were banned for 12 months by Cricket Australia after the ball tampering incident in South Africa. Smith was picked up by Toronto Nationals in the 2nd round of the auction, while David Warner was picked up during the 3rd round by Winnipeg Hawks.

Other international stars picked yesterday included Chris Gayle, Andre Russel, Evin Lewis, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Chris Lynn and Shahid Afridi.

Legendary Pakistan quick Younis will take control of the Winnipeg Eagles, while Moody – fresh off coaching Sunrisers Hyderabad to the Indian Premier League final – will take control of the Montreal Tigers in the respective coaching roles. Former West Indies coach Phil Simmons will mentor the Toronto Nationals, with former Pakistan quick and PSL coach Mohammad Akram (Edmonton Royals) and Jamaican coach Donovan Miller (Vancouver Knights) rounding out the coaching positions.

The month-long competition will begin on June 28th and feature six teams, with the five Canadian sides joined by a Cricket West Indies representative team, consisting entirely of players from the Caribbean.
