Club Sevens to kick-off in style

Dialog Inter-club 7s set to kick-off this weekend. The event with all its trimmings was launched this evening at the Duncan White Memorial Auditorium under the patronage of the Hon. Minister of Sports Mr. Faizer Mustapha together with Amali Nanayakkara Chief Marketing Officer Dialog Axiata Plc along with the officials of Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) and chief, Vice-president of the SLR Mr. Lasitha Gunarathna.

Sharing his thoughts regarding the upcoming Seven’s tournament the Hon. Minister added these words “Sports has no language, which is why we should use it to bond with one and other. I believe that we could reach greater heights in sports and make a mark in the international arena.”

Mr Gunaratne took the opportunity to thank Dialog Axiata Plc for their continuous support in uplifting the country’s sporting industry and also appreciated the efforts of the SLR who has been promoting rugby all over the island.

For the very first time, the tournament this year will be played in two legs with both legs taking place at the Colombo Racecourse grounds and is expected to attract many rugby fans throughout the two weeks. Expressing his views, SLR’s vice-president Mr. Lasitha Gunarathna added these words.

“The tournament will be played in two legs for the first time and 16 teams will fight for the title. The specialty this year will be the inclusion of a few development provincial teams who will take part.”

In reference to Sri Lanka Rugby’s plans for the upcoming season, he revealed that many changes are yet to come.

The 1st leg of the tournament is scheduled to take place on the 2nd and 3rd of June which will  be followed by the final leg on the 15th and 16 of June.
