A squad of 15 members was named today to take part in the 7th Women’s Asia Cup in Malaysia.

Shashikala Siriwardena will lead the side in the absence of regular captain Chamari Atapattu who has been unfortunately diagnosed with dengue. All-rounder Ama Kanchana was also not named in the squad due to illness. Yashoda Mendis who missed the previous series due to injury has been named in the squad subject to fitness. Chief Selector of Women’s Cricket Rasanjani De Alwis stated that Yashoda Mendis is mentally ready to play though she has not achieved desired fitness levels in the recent fitness tests.
Manager Varuna Waragoda stated that the team has a good combination of experience and youth, and are confident of performing well.
India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Thailand will compete along with Sri Lanka in this tournament. Sri Lanka have managed to reach the finals on 3 previous occasions while India have won all 7 past editions. India will clearly walk in as favourites.
The team will depart to Malaysia on the 1st of June and play their first match against Bangladesh on the 3rd of June.
