The last time the Singer school’s rugby league changed structure was way back in 2014, which turned the league format into a more complicated one. Discussions are currently underway of a possible change in the hotly contested Schools Rugby League as the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) is on the lookout for a transition in the format to accommodate more teams which according to President Ranjith Chandrasekara will reduce the competitiveness. This was brought up at a media briefing held at the Sports Ministry Auditorium presided over by the Minister of Sports himself in order to sort out the issues that eventually led the Singer schools to be postponed last week.
Before the change, 12 teams faced each other in consecutive weeks with the top team being crowned the champions while the bottom two teams make way to the top two teams of the lower division. However, after the year 2013, twelve teams were divided into two groups segment 1A and 1B with six teams featuring in each group making way for the two bottom teams of each group to be demoted to the plate championships.
At the time Isipathana was the team to reap rewards of the structure change as they were demoted according to the 2013 format but managed to stay in the top division going onto be the triple champs under the captaincy of Senal Deelaka.
Mr. Chandrasekara stated that a structure change will enhance their discipline which has been deteriorating as the years go by.
