48th Mercantile Sevens this July

As the end of the Schools’ Rugby Season is just around the corner, the big boys are set to take over the rugby grounds. Following the Club Rugby Sevens is the Mercantile Rugby Seven’s Tournament 2018 that will take place in July.

The much awaited Mercantile 7’s rugby tournament has players licking their lips, waiting impatiently to get back out on the paddock, this time for their corporate outfits.

MAS outfit led by Roshan WeerarathnaLast year, a star-studded MAS outfit led by Roshan Weerarathna went on to win the Championship Title after stealing the trophy from the 2016 Champions, Access, who had some big names in their midst.

The tournament will progress throughout three days this year as well, with over 30 teams set to battle it out for some silverware under the Cup, Plate, Bowl, and Shield categories.

Cup – MAS Holdings
Plate – Kanrich Finance
Bowl – Classic Travel
Shield – CDB ‘B’

Many players displayed their individual brilliance after rescuing their respective sides many times last time around. Richard Dharmapla, and Sandun Herath were among the heroes, and won awards for the Most Out-Standing Player of the Tournament and the Player of the Final.

Heshan Jansen (CDB ‘B’) – Shield segment best player
Gayan Wickramarathne (Classic Travel) – Bowl segment best player
Pabarasara Hewage (Kanrich finance) – Plate segment best player
Ishani Obeysekara (CDB) – Player of Ladies’ tournament
Sandun Herath (MAS) – Player of the final
Richard Dharampala – Most outstanding player of the tournament

The National Selectors will definitely have an eye on young talent and be on the lookout to recruit some talented players from the competition. The tournament is scheduled to take place on the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd of July at the Race Course international rugby stadium.
