The Club Sevens tournament’s kick off has been brought forward by Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) and is set to be played in two legs, here in Colombo.
The tournament has been brought forward to allow players to have sufficient prep time for the upcoming Asian Games and Asia Sevens Series that will take place later this year.
Although they pulled out of the Sevens tournament last year, League and Clifford Cup winners Kandy Sports Club will participate in the tournament this time around and will surely make things difficult for the defending champions of the Inter-Club Sevens Title, Navy Sports Club.
Last time around Navy SC and Sri Lanka national cap Buddhima Piyarathane was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the tournament while Nishon Perera of Havelock SC ended as the Top Try.
Last year’s Champs, Navy Sports Club
In second place last year was CR & FC ‘A’ while the other semifinalists were Police SC and Air Force SC.
The 1st Leg of this year’s tournament will be played on 2nd and 3rd June while the 2nd leg will take place two weeks later on the 16th and 17th at the Race Course Rugby Stadium. This will be a good opportunity for the national squad to get the necessary match time ahead of the Asian Games in August while the national selectors will be eying prospective players for the development squad with the national body focusing primarily on the sevens structure.
