Earlier this month Ireland nearly pulled off an upset win against Pakistan in their historic Test debut, a match-winning partnership by debutant Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam eventually saving Pakistan from an unforgettable defeat.
In the meantime, Afghanistan are preparing for their own debut in Tests, as they play India from the 14th -18th June. Ireland and Afghanistan will be written in the record books as the 11th and 12th Test playing nations respectively.
As the world of cricket welcomes Test cricket’s newbies, Nepal will take its first steps in ODI cricket later this year. Nepal, who were recently granted ODI status, will play Netherlands in their ODI debut on the 1st of August.
If the question of how many countries have played ODI cricket arises, most cricket followers around the world would not answer, some might say almost all the associate nations have played ODIs. Right? Wrong! They play List A matches. So what are the countries who have actually played ODIs? – 23 teams have played ODI cricket to date and on the 1st of August Nepal will become the 24th team to play ODIs. This is because many of the Associate teams we have heard of do not have ODI status.
