The first-ever Women’s Under 23 Super 4 Cricket Tournament 2018 was a stage for the bowlers as low scores were the order of the day.
The teams competing in the tournament, Colombo, Kandy, Dambulla and Galle, met each other once, with the team topping the table at the end of 3 games being declared the winner. All the matches ended in draws and results were based on first innings points as Kandy came out on top. The tournament was played in Horana and Bandaragama within the span of four days from the 2nd of April to 5th of April 2018.

Match No: 01 Dambulla Vs Colombo, at Aaron’s Country Club Grounds, Horana – 2nd April 2018
Dambulla edged past Colombo in a low-scoring clash at the Aaron’s Country Club Grounds, Horana. Sent in to bat, Colombo only managed 81 all out in 38 overs. Sri Lanka cap and Colombo’s skipper Hasini Perera top scored with 41 runs. The chief destroyer for Dambulla was Jinanjali Wijenayaka, with figures of 5 for 13. In reply, batting in their first innings, Dambulla scored 102 for 5 in 40 overs. Dambulla’s skipper Harshitha Madavi recorded an unbeaten half century, scoring 51 not out. The match resulted in first innings points for Dambulla.

Match No: 02 Galle vs Kandy, at Bandaragama Public Grounds – 2nd April 2018
The Galle team managed 183 all out in their first innings, which eventually turned out to be the tournament’s highest score. The sublime touch of Captain Sathya Sandeepani (60) helped the Galle team secure a fighting score against Kandy, as she registered a half century. The Kandy team collapsed, to be dismissed for 112, giving Galle a first innings advantage. Malsha Shehani’s, all-round heroics with the bat and ball went in vain; the Captain claimed 6 for 33 in the first innings with the ball and scored 44 with the bat. Galle scored 90 for 6 in their second innings and walked away with the first innings points.

Match No: 03 Galle vs Colombo, at Aaron’s Country Club Grounds, Horana – 3rd April 2018
Neither Galle nor Colombo managed to get a first innings advantage as the match ended in a draw. The dismal batting performances were the show of the day; batting first Colombo was bundled out for 53 and Galle replied with 52 for 9. The top scorer of the match was Galle’s Nilakshana Sandamini with 31 runs.

Match No: 04 Dambulla Vs Kandy, at Aaron grounds, Horana – 4th April 2018
The Kandy Team took the advantage against Dambulla with a 77-run first innings lead. Put in to bat the Kandy lasses totalled 126 for 9 wickets in 44 overs in their 1st innings to which Dambulla replied with a disappointing 49 all-out in 26.5 overs. At close of play, Kandy were on 30 for 5 in 16.5 overs, in their 2nd innings.
The all-round performance of Shayani Oshadi was the highlight of the day as she top scored with 46 runs for Kandy and then claimed 5/18 with the ball. Sashini Fernando claimed 3/29 while Sayani Dineshika claimed 3/9 in the 1st and 2nd innings respectively for Dambulla.

Galle claimed first innings points after ending Dambulla’s first innings effort for 87 all-out. Sathya Sandeepani and Kaveesha Dihari, who recently made her debut for Sri Lanka, claimed 4/24 and 3/19 respectively. The first innings effort of Galle was a snail-paced affair. They ultimately managed to roll past Dambulla, scoring 88/9 in 47 overs.

Match No: 06 Colombo vs Kandy, at Bandaragama Public Grounds – 05th April 2018
The all-round efforts of Malsha Shehani and Umesha Thimeshini, clinched first innings points for Kandy against Colombo. Batting first, Colombo managed 117 all out in 49.1 overs, with Hasini Perera top scoring with 27 runs. The Kandy duo Malsha Shehani and Umesha Thimeshini demolished the Colombo batters with figures of 4/29 and 4/36. In reply Kandy managed 141 for 6, earning them the edge over Colombo. Once again, the duo of Malsha Shehani and Umesha Thimeshini turned the fortunes for Kandy, scoring 48 each with the bat. With the points secured in this game, Kandy topped the 4-team tournament to emerge champions.
