Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will raise the standards of the highly-questioned domestic cricket system in Sri Lanka with the launch of Super Provincial Tournament which will get underway on 30th March.

The tournament was officially launched at a ceremony held on Tuesday evening in Colombo with the participation of SLC hierarchy and all team members. The four teams will be playing each other once including one day & night match with the pink ball and the team with the most number of points will be crowned the champions.

“Our whole plan is to provide the best, quality players to the national team and there is no better way than playing provincial cricket to bridge the gap between the domestic cricket and international cricket.“ Sri Lanka Cricket chief Thilanga Sumathipala said.

The Provincial Tournament was introduced to the Sri Lankan Cricketing Calendar way back in 2003 by SLC President Hon. Thilanga Sumathipala, who was also the President of the SLC during that time.

The cream of Sri Lanka Cricket, more than 80 players including all national stars will be in action in this competition which will help the national selectors in determining the squads for the forthcoming Sri Lanka tour of West Indies and Sri Lanka ‘A’ tour of Bangladesh in May/June.

The four teams will be pruned down to 15 players for each game with one U19 player included in the final squad.

The players were chosen based on their performances in the recently-concluded club tournament. Former national selector Ranjith Madurusinghe will serve as the tournament director.
