The Trinity-Antonian 2nd XI mini battle ended in a tense draw in Katugasthota earlier today
After being sent into bat by the Trinitian skipper Poorna Wanigasekara, opener Dayan Pankaja whirlwind 32 off 35 balls set up the perfect scoring platform for the hosts to dominate. He was the first to go back to the pavilion while his partner Mohammed Ruckshan joined him in the following over.
Kaveen Shashidaran, the off spinner stunned the top order batsmen by picking up 3 wickets in his first spell following the pacers’ spell. Trinity continued with the same momentum and picked up wickets at regular intervals. Kamil built up good innings and he managed to score 58 off 81. St. Anthony’s College managed to score only 176 for their first innings before Tea.
Trinity came out to bat and had a slow start. Sasith Hirudika opened his account, picking up the 1st wicket for St. Anthony’s College. Rajeeth along with his partner Chanuka started to build up a good partnership but experienced campaigner Kevin Dhananjayan came up with his magical arm ball and picked up Chanuka after giving away two back to back boundaries. Day 1 concluded with Trinity in a strong position at 145/5.
Trinity was aiming for a big score as they went past the Antonian’s total with 5 wickets remaining on day 2. Kamil managed to grab 5 wickets giving away 26 runs while opener Rajeeth topped the batting charts with 94 runs. Trinity managed to score 201 and gained a lead of 25 runs in the 1st Innings.
St Anthony’s 2nd innings saw Kamil score 56. This time he got some good support from Sasith Hirudika and Lasitha Werallagama. Sasith managed to score 38 while Lasitha managed to score 30. Antonians declared when they were on 197 for 9 in 50.2 Overs, setting a target of 173 for Trinitians in 19 overs.
Earlier on Trinitians managed a steady run rate of 10 in dreams of sealing an outright win but Sasith managed to pick up 3 wickets giving away 44 runs to slow them down. Trinity managed to score 110 losing 5 wickets at the end of 19 overs as the game ended in a draw. Poorna Wanigasekara topped the batting side with 29 while Himanga supported him with 26.
The match ended in a draw with Trinity lifting the Shield after 2 years for winning First Innings points.
