The Sri Lankan Wheelchair brigade set out for gold in the third and final week of the ITF Futures Series, Colombo leg, but failed after coming ever so close. The tournament took place over a course of 5 days at the SSC Tennis Courts.

Gamini Dissanayake coming hot off a victory in the men’s single from week 2, looked to close out a successful term with a win here. Unfortunately, his week 2 victim Ha-Gel Lee was determined not to go down twice consecutively without a fight. Ha-Gel made the difference in week 3 closing out the final match against Dissanayake in a 7/6 (4), 6/2 victory. R. Ranaweera was the only other Lankan to make it to the quarter-final stage only to have to bow down to the champ in a tight three setter 4/6,6/1,7/5.

The bottom seeds of the doubles category and week 2 winners Ranaweera and Dharmasena took on their victims yet again in the final week. Ha-Gel Lee, not satisfied with the singles win, made a brilliant comeback to take home double victory along with partner Sang-Ho Oh. With a fight in the first set, Sri Lanka went down crying 7/5,6/3.

After a sizzling second week of wins, the Sri Lankans were hot off the win boat stepping into the third week to finish the series on a high. Unfortunately, the Korean’s experience joined the party in the final stages to knock our men down. Coach Jagath Welikala and Specialist Aad Zwan will not be too disappointed with the boys’ performance as they have collected valuable points in the ITF rankings which will act a major booster in their future tours.
