Trinity and Ananda qualify for Quarter Finals

Four pre quarter finals and one traditional match in the Singer Schools U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 were conducted today around the island. 

Trinity College, Kandy vs St. Aloysius College, Galle

Trinity College recorded a 9 wicket win over St. Aloysius College today at the historic Asgiriya Stadium and qualified for the quarter finals of Singer Schools U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament. Trinity College batsmen resumed day two on 151 runs for 9 wickets and could not bat for a longer period of time as they were bowled out for 158 runs. Left arm spinner Kavika Dilshan took a five wicket haul for the Galle boys.

Even though the visitors began their second innings trailing by 28 runs, they showed a much better batting display posting 227 runs for 5 wickets before making the declaration. Left handed batsman Ravindu Sanjana made a terrific knock of 102 runs for the visitors. The hosts had to chase down 200 runs to win the match which they did with 9 wickets remaining. Left handed Pubudu Bandara led the way for the victory stroking a magnificent century for Trinity.

St. Peter’s College, Colombo vs Ananda College, Colombo

Defending champions Ananda College managed to qualify for the quarter finals of the Singer Schools U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament,  beating St. Peter’s College today Bambalapitiya. After being 169 runs for 7 wickets, the visitors were bowled out for 213 runs. Left arm spinner Ameen Miflal and right arm fast medium bowler Santhush Goonathilaka picked up 3 wickets each for the hosts. St. Peter’s batsmen began their second innings trailing by 85 runs and posted 166 runs for 4 wickets when umpires called stumps on day two.

St.Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia vs Nalanda College, Colombo

The pre-quarter final between S. Thomas’ College and Nalanda College commenced today at S. Thomas College grounds in Mount Lavinia. After been put into bat first, the Thomians posted 254 runs for 9 wickets and decided to declare the innings. Left handed batsman Sithara Hapuhinna (76) and right handed batsman Maneesha Rupasinghe (51) scored half-tons for the hosts. Off spinner Lakshitha Rasanjana was the pick of the bowlers for visitors as he took 6 wickets for 67 runs. In reply, Nalanda College batsmen were struggling with the bat as they finished day one on 31 runs for 3 wickets.

St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa vs Maris Stella College, Negombo

The pre-quarter final between St. Sebastian’s College and Maris Stella College commenced today at Kadirana grounds. The hosts’ skipper won the toss and decided to take the first lease of the wicket but posted only 201 runs on the board for their first innings. Left arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama who represented Sri Lanka in the recently concluded Under 19 world cup showed his tricks with the ball picking up 5 wickets for 64 runs.

The visitors replied strongly with the bat as they finished day one on 210 runs for 4 wickets. Left handed stroke maker Nishitha Abilash top scored with 92 runs while right handed batsman Nuwanidu Fernando contributed with a valuable 79 runs.

Gurukula College, Kelaniya vs St. Anthony’s College, Wattala

Traditional fixture between Gurukula College and St. Anthony’s College ended in a draw today at St. Anthony’s College grounds. However, first innings points were won by visiting team Gurukula College in the drawn game. Gurukula College batsmen resumed day two on 353 runs for 7 wickets and added only 12 runs to their overnight score as they declared the innings just after Malindu Viduranga made his much deserved century.

In reply, the hosts made 265 runs all out for their first innings. Right handed batsmen Avishka Tharindu (86) and Joel Printo (59) top scored for the lads from Wattala. Lads from Kelaniya began their second innings 100 runs ahead and scored 74 runs for 2 wickets at stumps on day two.
