The World Cup of Women’s Tennis, the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas is the women’s premier international team tennis event. Making their debut back in 1990, Team Sri Lanka has been in the competition on and off throughout the last two decades.
After a long break from 2008 to 2012, the team is regaining its composure and climbing up the ranks, one year at a time.

The 2018 Asia/Oceania version of the event has hit the calendar once again and Team Sri Lanka are gearing up for the challenge. This year 14 nations will head to Isa Town, Bahrain to compete in the group II play-offs starting on the 6th of February. Among the 14, Sri Lanka has three new faces in the senior Fed Cup team.
The team will be led by former Men’s National Champ and Davis Cup veteran Dineshkanthan Thangarajah. This will be his maiden run as the non-playing captain and coach of the senior Fed Cup team, having led the junior Fed Cup and World Juniors team prior to this. National Runner-up and Visakhian Nethmi Waduge is the most senior player in the team having played the senior Fed Cup since 2014. While she carries the most experience, Anika Seneviratne of Ladies’ College, will bring in international exposure to the team as well, having toured to Dubai and Singapore participating in junior ITF Series tournaments recently. Rounding up the team are two more freshers stepping on to their first senior international tournament. Bishopian, Savini Jayasuriya was a member of the world junior squad 2017 and a winner of an ATF 14/U ATF Series. Hailing from Holy Family Convent is Janali Manamperi who earned the final spot in the team after a grueling win over six-time Women’s National Champion, Amritha Muttiah.

The 14 nations will be divided into two pools of three teams and two pools of four teams to compete in round-robin basis. The winners of each pool will play-off against one another (A1v C1 and B1 v D1) to determine which two nations will advance to Asia/Oceania Zone Group I in 2019. The draw will be decided on the 5th of February with all Nation Captains present with the tournament referee and other officials at the tournament venue.
