Dialog Rugby League: Week 4 Preview

One team remained unbeaten as a thrilling round three drew to a close last weekend. What does this week have in store for us?

Coming into this week’s game after tasting victory for the first time in 30 games, CH will surely seek to carry their momentum through and grind Havelock SC, who tasted defeat for the first time this season. Playing hosts, CH will be aiming to imitate and improve with the likes of Lee Keegal, Samuel Maduwantha and Anuradha Herath being pivotal to dispose of Havelock threats and coach Sanath Martis will no doubt have it in his game plan.

For the Havies, game changers of the likes of Hirantha Perera, Chamara Dabare and Dulaj Perera, have been starved off the ball through the first few games and for the Havelocks to trouble the opposition these boys will undoubtedly need to see more of it.

The Havelock three quarter line has not stood up to its full potential, despite the big names. They will be looking to put their poor performance behind them and seek to deliver the goods come Friday.

Havelocks should be able to pip CH, however this game will be a brawl between who wants it the most; a team with new found confidence or a team which is desperate to get back to winning ways.

After a shocking loss at the hands of CH & FC last week, CR will be aiming to regain lost pride against a wounded Army SC outfit.

CR & FC, a generally composed side, was seen panicking under the immense pressure, making poor decisions and their defensive lapses led them to their first loss of the season. The Longdon Place gang will need to step up, relieving some pressure on Ratwatte if they are to get anything out of this game.

Coach Ferreti may have to rethink about starting the inexperienced Chamod Fernando and Wageesha Weerasinghe at fullback and no.8 positions whilst bench-warming Rehan Silva and Omalka Gunaratne. Kavindu de Costa was not at his best with his distribution and decision making skills last week. He will be another man aiming to better his performance and control the game.

Skipper Thusitha Senanayake and center Imanka Ariyapala will have to make an impact if Army SC is to win, whilst veteran Asoka Jayalal will have to lead the forward pack resourcefully to see his team through. Army will have to guard against some whiplash from the home side, it’s a side perfectly capable of claiming a win here.

A pumped-up Navy outfit will be aiming to add insult to injury as they host Police SC. Captain Dhanushka ‘Gertha’ Perera, Lahiru Wishwajith and Supun Peiris put on a clinical display last weekend and Navy will be impregnable playing in their den and they will focus on scoring more points than sticking to their usual defensive game plan. However, coach Mothilal Jayathilake will be tempted to rest a few big names as well.

Captain Dhanushka ‘Gertha’ Perera, Lahiru Wishwajith and Supun Peiris put on a clinical display and will surely look to repeat it this weekend.

Penetrating the sailors’ defence will be a huge test for coach Shamly Nawaz and his inexperienced Police forwards, who drove promising mauls in the previous games.

Fly half Sandesh Jayawickrama and full-back Uthpala Edirisinghe will need to be on target with their kicks and decision making, if the cops are to stand a chance.

The sailors are overwhelming favourites coming into the game, but the cops are capable of an upset, but it looks a long way away.

Obvious favourites Kandy SC, will look to thump yet another opposition in their quest to get the Kandy Machine up and running. Kandy won with ease, however, they will look to add the ‘X’ factor into their game – something they lacked in their win last week. Coach Sean Wijesinghe will be tempted to rest a few big named players, but the usual suspects, Dharmapala, Ranjan and captain Weerarathne will surely be a headache to Air Force.

With no coach to back them, a tough task lays ahead of them up in Nittawela. If Air Force SC manage to overcome the Kandy forwards – who still look shaky –  the Airmen may have an opportunity of getting some points. Charith Senaviratne, Gayan Iddamalgoda, Radeesha Seneviratne and Saraka Werella are the players Air Force will look up to steer their flight to safety.
