Sachintha Chamith steers Gurukula to victory

Three matches in the Singer Schools U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 were conducted today around the island.

Gurukula College, Kelaniya vs Wesley College, Colombo

Gurukula College managed to record an outright win against Wesley College in the Group C encounter which concluded today at Campbell ground. Wesley College resumed day two on 42/3 and were bowled out for 146 runs in 63.3 overs. After being asked to follow on, Wesley College could not impress with the bat even in the second innings as they were bowled out for 123 runs.

Left arm spinner Sachintha Chamith impressed with the ball for Gurukula College as he ran through the batting line up of Wesley College with 6 wickets. Gurukula College chased down the target of 12 runs with 9 wickets to spare.

Zahira College, Maradana vs St. Joseph’s College, Maradana

St. Joseph’s College managed to secure honors on the first day of the group D encounter against Zahira College which commenced today at Zahira grounds.

After being asked to bat first, Zahira College posted 160 all out. Mohmmad Zacky (43) and Mohammad Shahadullah (42) top scored for Zahira College while Left arm spinner Dunith Wellalage continued his tricks with the ball by picking up another 4 wicket haul.

In reply, St. Joseph’s College got a strong start to their innings as they scored 153 runs for the loss of 3 wickets at stumps. Left handed batsman Revan Kelly stroked a brilliant 81 not out for St Joseph’s. The match will continue tomorrow for day two.

D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo vs St. Thomas College, Matara

The Group A encounter between D.S. Senanayake College and St. Thomas College began today at the Bandaragama Grounds. The skipper of D.S. Senanayake College won the toss and elected to bat first and posted 225 runs all out for the first innings. Teron Baskaran top scored with 41 runs while Abishek Liyanarachchi and Chamath Yatawara chipped in with 30s. Kavindu Ridmal was the pick of the bowlers for the Thomians as he picked up 3 wickets for 45 runs. However, the lads from Matara could not impress with the bat as they scored just 98 runs for the loss of 7 wickets at stumps on day one. The match will continue tomorrow for day two.
