CEB, Ports, Air Force & Army into semi finals

Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), Air Force SC and Army SC booked semifinal places at the end of the ‘Outdoor Segment’ of the 10th Munchee National Volleyball Championship 2017 Men’s Super League group stage.

The matches were played at multiple venues across the country including Puttalam (Koswadiya, Nattandiya & Anamaduwa), Matugama (Walagedera), Anuradhapura (Rajanganaya), Gampaha (Radawana), Colombo (Mattegoda), Seeduwa (Raddoluwa), Gampaha (Siyanee Tharu), Rathnapura (Kahawatta), Kurunegala (Maligapitiya) and Kegalle (Galigamuwa).

Air Force & CEB defeat Ports & Army in thrillers

On the 3rd and final day of the ‘Indoor Segment’ of the 10th..

Group A

Group A saw thrilling 5 setters in the Air Force SC v Police SC and Police SC v Navy SC games while the group top decider between SLPA and Air Force was called off as a draw due to unfavourable conditions.

In the match between Air Force and Police, favourites Air Force went 2-0 up winning the opening two sets 25-20 and 25-21. However, Police stormed back winning the next two 20-25 and 22-25 to send the game into the 5th set. In a hotly contested 5th set it was Air Force who narrowly defeated Police 15-13.

In the other match which went the distance, Police avenged their indoor segment loss against Navy SC. In that too it went to 5 sets. This time, it was Police won the 1st set 25-21 before Navy equaled 19-25.

Air Force & Army tops Super League Women’s groups

Air Force SC and Army SC remained unbeaten and topped..

Then, Navy won the 3rd set 20-25 and Police edged out the sailors 25-23 in a must win 4th set. The 5th set saw back and forth action as both sides matched each other point for point and it was the cops who won 16-14.

Group B

Three matches went to 4 sets while two games were called off as draws due to unfavourable conditions. The matches which were drawn were the, Army SC v MASLI (MAS Leisureline) and NYSC and MASLI games.

CEB lost the first set in their matches against NYSC and MASLI. Against NYSC they lost the 1st set 23-25 but went onto win the match 25-15, 25-17 & 25-13. Though they lost 20-25 in the 1st set against MASLI, CEB comfortably defeated their opponents in the next three 25-19, 25-13 & 25-18.

Army too lost the 1st against NYSC 24-26 but strolled through to win the next three 25-20, 25-14 & 25-18.
