Asel guides Ananda to victory; Trinity, Dharmashoka with wins

Here’s a round up of the matches which concluded in the Singer U19 Division I CricketTournament today.

Trinity College vs St Benedict’s College

Trinity College registered a comprehensive 8 wicket victory in their Group A clash against St Benedict’s College at Kotahena. St Benedict’s College resumed 2 nd day’s play with 115 for 5 on board in their 1 st innings. Their last 5 wickets fell in a canter as their innings crumbled for just 160 runs. With a lead of 101 runs in favour of the Trinitians, they enforced the follow on. The hosts had to put up a better performance but that wasn’t the case. Vimukthi Nethumal ran through the Benedictine batting line up and the home side was restricted for just 131 runs. Trinity College were given a target of 31 runs to get and they did it in just 7.5 overs with 8 wickets in hand.

Early on, St Benedict’s College won the toss and elected to bowl first. Trinity posted a massive 261 all out for their first innings which included a century from Trawan Percival.

S. Thomas’ College vs Maliyadewa College

Thomians managed to secure their 3 rd outright victory this season as they beat Maliyadewa in their Group D encounter at Mt Lavinia. Maliyadewa resumed play with 18 runs on board, following on in their 2 nd innings. They managed to put up a much-improved performance with the bat in the second innings. Chaluka Athapaththu top scored with 47 runs while Kaveen Bandara and Dulaj Ranathunga chipped in with valuable cameos. Thomians were made to dig deep and they finally persevered as they cleaned up Maliyadewa 2 nd innings for 198 runs. Dellon Pieris picked up a 6-for for the hosts. The hosts were given an easy target of just 55 runs and they got over the line in just 10.2 overs with 9 wickets in hand.

Early on, Maliyadewa won the toss and elected to bowl first. The hosts posted 225 runs for their first innings and in reply the boys from Kurunagala could only make 81 runs.

Royal College vs Richmond College

The traditional encounter between Royal College and Richmond College ended in a draw at
Royal College grounds. 2 nd days play resumed with Richmond College having 33 runs on board for the loss of 2 wickets in their 2 nd innings. It was a hard grind for the visitors as they reached 165 for 9 before declaring their innings. In reply, the hosts put together a strong batting performance with Kamil Mishara and Gayan Dissanayke scoring half centuries. At stumps on day 2, Royal College was 196 for 4 in 53.2 overs.

Early on, Royal College was put to bat first by the visitors. They posted 223 runs for their first innings with half centuries from Kavindu Madarasinghe and Bhagya Dissanayke.

Dharmashoka College vs Maratu Maha Vidyalaya

Dharmashoka registered a massive win by 210 runs against Moratu Maha Vidyalaya in their Group A clash at Balapitiya. Moratu Maha Vidyalaya won the toss and elected to field first. Dharmashoka put up a decent performance with the bat as they posted 214 runs for their first innings. In reply, Moratu MV was cleaned up for just 134 runs thanks to a 5-for from Kavindu Nadeeshan.

Dharmashoka extended their lead by adding 174 runs in their second innings in quick time. The boys from Moratu Maha Vidyalaya had an uphill task and it proved too much at the end. They were cleaned up for just 44 runs in their second innings which gave the boys from down south a massive victory.

St Servatius College vs Wesley College

St Servatius College grabbed first innings points in their group C clash against Wesley College at Wesley College grounds. The hosts won the toss and elected to field first. Servatius could only make 169 runs in 76.4 overs in their 1 st innings. In reply, Wesley College failed once again with the bat as they crumbled for just 75 runs.

The boys from Matara added 164 runs more to their lead and set an impossible target of 334 runs. Wesley’s top order crumbled yet again but they held on until stumps to save another outright defeat this season

Ananda College vs Zahira College
Ananda College registered an 8-wicket victory over Zahira College in their Group D clash at Zahira grounds. Day 2 resumed with Zahira College in utter disarray. They had lost 4 wickets for just 22 runs and things did not turn around for the home side. Their innings crumbled for just 99 runs with Asel Sigera bagging 3 for 23. With a lead of 136 runs in their favour, Ananda College enforced the follow on. Zahira’s 2 nd innings looked good early on but once again it was Asel Sigera who stood in their way. He completed his 10-wicket match bag after taking 7 wickets in the second innings which cleaned up the home side for 181 runs. Ananda College were given a target of just 45 runs and they got over the line in just 10.3 overs with 8 wickets in hand.
