24th Junior National Squash Championships – Top favorites too hot for the under-dogs

The 24th Junior National Squash Championship conducted by the Sri Lanka Squash Federation will be worked off at the Tamil Union Squash Complex from 05th to 12th October under eighteen categories comprising of both Girls and Boys Junior events.

The tournament is considered the most prestigious junior event in the domestic squash calendar and junior players are fully geared up to put up their best performance to clinch the championship. Ravindu Laksiri and Mihiliya Methsarani are the top favorites to win the U-19 Junior National titles.

Ravindu Laksiri is the current defending Mens junior National champion having won the title for the first time last year. Since then Ravindu had being dominating both the junior and senior events and was also unbeaten in the domestic junior league. Next in line for the top spot are Shamil Wakeel, Udantha Hewage , Kavinda Hurulle, Lakitha Senanayake and Senindu Dharmathilake.

Meanwhile Mihiliya Methsarani the current Senior National Champion and the defending Junior National Champion has been flying high this year winning two Bronze medals in the Asian Junior Squash Championships and Youth Asian Games. Naduni Gunawardena will be the other top contestant already having beaten Mihiliya once this year.

Shamil Wakeel,Viduranga Udantha Senindu Dharmathilaka the upcoming junior players are expected to do well in the U-17 event while Shamil Wakeel is the top favorite to clinch the title. Druwinka Perera who took the Asian U-15 top seed for a five setter at The Asian junior Squash Championships will be the top favorite to win the U-15 title while Methmal Wood and Heshan Balasuriya are expected to do well in their respective age groups in the Boys junior categories.

Kasuni Gunawardena,Saduni Gunawardena,Fathoum Issadeen Wasundara Suwaris ,Chanithma Sinaly,Devmini Gallage and Sameera Deen are also expected to do well in their respective age groups in the girls junior categories.

The tournament will be conducted under the following age groups

BOYS UNDER -19, GIRLS UNDER – 19, BOYS UNDER -17, GIRLS UNDER – 17, BOYS UNDER -15, GIRLS UNDER – 15, BOYS UNDER -13, GIRLS UNDER-13, BOYS UNDER – 11, GIRLS UNDER – 11, BOYS UNDER – 09, GIRLS UNDER – 09, BOYS UNDER -19(Novices), GIRLS UNDER – 19(Novices), BOYS UNDER -15(Novices), GIRLS UNDER – 15(Novices), BOYS UNDER – 11(Novices) &GIRLS UNDER – 11(Novices)
