Sri Lanka to kick off ICC Women’s Championship in the West Indies
The second edition of the ICC Women’s Championship will get underway with the series…
Sri Lanka got off to a decent start after winning the toss and batting first, despite losing opener Nipuni Hansika for 8. Openers Hansika and Yasoda Mendis were slow off the blocks but managed to survive the power play, putting on 22 for the 1st wicket in just over 11 overs. Sri Lanka’s innings never really gathered any momentum with none of the top 7 batters able to find any sort of rhythm. Only Mendis, Chamari Atapattu and Dilani Manodara were able to get into double figures and even they could not manage a strike rate of over 60. In fact, the entire innings, which lasted 49.3 overs, contained just 5 boundaries, a stat that would surely worry the coaching staff.
With wickets tumbling at regular intervals, the visitors managed just 136 in 49.3 overs. Hayley Mathews was the pick of the bowlers for the Windies women, picking up 3/18 in 10 overs. Afy Fletcher and captain Stephanie Taylor also picked up 3 wickets a piece.

The Sri Lanka women’s cricketers, took flight to the West Indies last evening for..
West Indies got off to a bad start with the bat as Kycia Knight was run-out in the very first over of the innings, with Sri Lanka Skipper Inoka Ranweera catching her short of her crease. SriPali Weerakkody then took the prized wicket of Taylor and the hosts were in some trouble at 7/2. From that point however, despite keeping the scoring rate in check, Sri Lanka could not make regular breakthroughs and former skipper Merissa Aguilleira guided the home team to a 6 wicket win.
With the win, the West Indies got their ICC Women’s Championship campaign off to a good start and will go into the 2nd game tomorrow looking to seal a series win.
