Experienced national ranked and Fed Cup player Medhira Samarasinghe was crowned the new Sri Lanka National Women’s champion when she defeated 15-year-old Anika Seneviratne in the Women’s Open Singles at the 102nd Sri Lanka Nationals that was worked off at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts last evening (10th).
The National Championship, which is the flagship event in the national tennis calendar, commenced at the beginning of this month. The tournament organized in two forms; junior and senior is the decider for the age group titles from under 12 through to the open category.
Last year’s junior national champion, Medhira Samarasinghe got her first professional title defeating the 15-year-old Anika Seneviratne. It was a re-run of last year’s Girls’ Under 18 Singles final where the two of them met and Samarasinghe ended up winning the silverware.
Progressing to the finals, Samarasinghe had the better out of Anika as she went on to record an easy 6-2, 6-2 victory.
Winning her 1st national title at 18 years of age, Medhira Samarasinghe who is a product of Ladies College succeeds former Visakhian Thisuri Molligoda as the Women’s Open Singles Champion.
