Sri Lanka has been drawn in pool C for the 19th Asian Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship to be held in Philippines.
Squad of 12 for Asian Senior Women’s Championship
The Championship is scheduled to be held from the 9th to 17th of August in Manila, Philippines. The
Sri Lanka are among South Korea and Vietnam who were placed 2nd and 5th respectively the last time it was held back in 2015. New Zealand, who rounds off the 4 teams in pool C, makes their entry for the first time since 2007. Sri Lanka finished in 14th and last place back in 2015. Sri Lanka are ranked 115th in the world while South Korea, Vietnam and New Zealand are ranked 10th, 44th and 64th respectively.
The draw was done by the Asian Volleyball Confederation at Dusit Princess Srinakarin Hotel. Dr Eom Han-Joo, Chairman of the AVC Sports Events Council, presided over the drawing of lots ceremony, while Mr Somporn Chaibangyang, President of the Thailand Volleyball Association, was guest of honour to deliver a welcome address to all participants.
“With eight major tournaments being held by the AVC this year, I’m convinced this will help promote volleyball across the continent and in Thailand in particular. As the AVC Headquarters is located in Bangkok, we (TVA) are very happy and honoured to be part of the AVC. We will throw our strong support behind the governing body in order that they will gain more achievements in whatever campaign in the near future,” Somporn said in his speech.
The tournament will be held from 9th to the 17th of August.
A total of 14 teams will compete in the tournament. The pools were drawn as follows;
Pool A – Philippines, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong
Pool B – China, Japan, Australia
Pool C – Korea, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, New Zealand
Pool D – Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Iran, Maldives
