The second day of the 47th Mercantile Rugby 7s Tournament was worked off at the Racecourse Stadium earlier today. Access topped group A while Dialog topped group B after exciting game against John Keells which ended in a draw.
More than 45 games were played on day 02 and the majority of the games were for the Bowl and Shield segments while six games of the Cup segment was played under lights. Matches commenced at 08.00 AM with Classic Travel winning their encounter comprehensively against Janashakthi 26 points 07.
Most of Bowl and Shield segment games were one sided encounters. This segment had 25 teams divided in to 4 groups. The top 2 teams of each group advanced to the Bowl quarterfinals and the third and fourth placed teams moved towards the shield quarterfinals. The Cup segment had 7 teams divided into 2 groups and the top two teams advanced to the semifinals with the bottom 3 teams going into the plate segment.
Two tries from Richard Dharampala guided Access to any easy victory over AMW ‘A’ 24-00. Weerarathne Brothers put on an excellent performance in their 19 points to 07 win against the up and coming Kanrich Finance outfit.
Dominant performances by Dulaj Perera and Nishon Perera helped John Keells demolish CDB ‘A’ 24 points to nil.
Tries from Srinath Suriyabandara and Richard Dharampala ensured that Access stayed unbeaten at the end of Day 02 as they defeated MAS 12 points to nil.
Kanrich Finance won a tight game against AMW ‘A’ 12 points to 05.
The final game of the day was the most exciting and a nail-biting game as Dialog took on John Keells. At half time the score stood at 7 apiece with tries from Chamara Dabare for Dialog and Thilina Wijesinghe from JKH. John Keels scored a try through Shashanka Ariyarathne early in the second half but the game ended in a nail-biting draw as Buddima Piyarathne scored an under the post try to level scores at 14 all.
Access will face John Keells and Dialog will play MAS in their Cup semifinals tomorrow (23rd).
